What is Metzora?

These parshiyot - Tazria and Metzora tell about the metzora. The Sages say that the word "Metzora" is a combination of the word "motzi ra - one who emits slander" - meaning spreading negative information that is t
ruthful, implying that the skin disease tzara'at is retribution for one who slanders, since the Metzora spread derogatory information.

Yet there is another meaning to tzara'at that a metzora suffers, as it is stated in Gemara about tzara'at [Berachot 5b]: It is nothing else but an altar of atonement. Suffering purifies a person from all evilness, since through suffering he is cleansed from all sin.

This is the reason for the juxtaposition in the Torah: "If a woman conceives ... and on the eighth day, the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised" and following this is parashat Metzora, which signifies that just as through the mizvah of Brit Mila [circumcision] the child connects to the Covenant of Avraham Avinu, so too the suffering and pain that a person experiences because of his tzara'at removes all evilness from him and connects him to Hashem.

Since suffering is for the benefit of man; then he should not despair when it comes upon him.
 Rabbi David Hanania Pinto

A Guest, a Fish and a Prayer
 Yerachmiel Tilles

Wow! What an extraordinary, enormous fish! I must buy it in honor of the Shabbat!" exclaimed the Jewish lady excitedly to the maid who'd accompanied her to the marketplace. "How fortunate that we came nice and early this Friday."

Because the fish was so large, it was very expensive, but she could well afford it. Her husband, a noted scholar and leader of the community, was also quite wealthy.

She herself was an exceptional woman. As the daughter of Rabbi Meir of Kostentin and granddaughter of the famed Rabbi Yaakov Emden, she well appreciated the delight and importance of a Torah atmosphere on Shabbat. Seeing her purchase energetically thrashing around in her basket, she joyfully thanked G d for enabling her to enhance the Shabbat table in such regal fashion.

That afternoon a carriage pulled up in front of their door, and a distinguished-looking man alighted. No one knew who he was, but it was obvious from his appearance and deportment that here was a true Torah personality. Her husband welcomed him heartily, and with respect and deference invited him to stay for Shabbat.

The guest, who chose not to reveal his identity, was none other than the holy Rabbi Yitzchak of Drohovitch. While Rabbi Yitzchak definitely enjoyed the Shabbat with his scholarly host in the luxurious setting, the whole time, night and day, he was nagged by puzzlement. What was the reason for the amazing chain of events that led him to spend the Day of Rest far from home? Surely it was not just to have a pleasurable Shabbat. What was he supposed to accomplish here?

After the Third Meal the holy rabbi retired to his room to rest for a bit, but his feeling of unfulfilled purpose gave him no peace. He decided to do a shaalat chalom ("query by dream"). Before he lay down, he composed his mind carefully and focused on his query: "May Heaven inform me why I have been sent to this town. Where are the hidden sparks of holiness that I am supposed to elevate? What must I achieve?"

When he awoke, he had his answer. There is no special task for you to fulfill here, he was informed while he slept, nor anything to rectify. But on Friday morning the lady of the house had purchased a large fish in honor of the Shabbat, and on her way home from the marketplace she had prayed: "Master of the Universe! You granted me this extraordinary fish in honor of Your holy Shabbat. Please also grant me a suitably pious and learned guest to enjoy this fish tonight." As nobody in this generation is more worthy than you, you were "summoned" by Heaven to arrive here for Shabbat.

After havdalah and the melaveh malkah meal, Rabbi Yitzchak made his departure. The host and his sons escorted him out to his carriage. Much to their surprise - and at variance with accepted custom- their distinguished holy guest requested of them that they call the hostess out for the farewell too.

When she arrived, he said to her: "I was a great distance from here, but because of your prayer yesterday, I was compelled to travel all the way here to spend Shabbat with your family. Your prayers are powerful!"

Biographical notes:

Rabbi Yitzchak of Drohovitch was a leading Kabbalist of his generation, and father of Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov (1731-1786), a major disciple of Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, who first went to the Besht as a boy with his father. His Hilulah (Day of Joy)  anniversary is Nissan 7 (March 22 this year). Link to our Hilulah page Hilulah and select the month you are searching for.

Rabbi Meir of Kostentin, head of the rabbinical court in Konstantynow, Poland, was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Emden (1697-1776), a leading rabbinical authority, who in turn was the son of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Ashkenazi, the "Chacham Zvi."

S habbat Tazria - Metzora
In many years the two parashiot of Tazria and Merzora are read together. This indicates a similar inner essence. That energy essence is purification. Below is how each Parasha relates to this essence.

Shabbat Tazria:

Tazria is normally translated as "becoming pregnant". This comes from the shoresh Zion Raish Ayin which has a connection to "seed" and "sperm". The word can also be translated based on a connection to the shoresh of Zion Raish which connects to "stranger" - "strange" - "foreign" - alien - layman - outsider - and wreath. Using the shoresh zion raish one can translate the letter sequence as "time for my layman" or "See the end of my alien".  There are many other ways to translate this word tazria.

In the parasha of Tazria in the  verse Leviticus chapter 13 verse 33 has a word "Wehitgalach" with a large gimmel. The letter gimmel starts the Hebrew word "pride". The large gimmel relates to a vaccine against "pride". Wherever there is pride there is no room for HaShem. The modern Kabbalists teach that this large gimmel and the  verse in which it exists represents a cure for brain cancer. This is clearly purification.

Shabbat Metzora:

One shoresh for the hebrew word Metzora is Metzar - mem tzadi raish. This shoresh connects to "narrowness" - limitation - and Egypt. In looking at the letters one realizes that the letter tzadi can be substituted by a zion. Thus concealed in the word Metzora is the same shoresh as tazria - zion raish. Then one realizes that "the metzora" con be seen as "from the Alien Vav Hai". Clearly an Alien God needs to be cleansed so that the essence of purity comes through.

In this section we offer a few Kabbalistic tools and links to more on their Explanations:

Shiluv:
Yeshshem teaches about a spiritual tool named Shiluv - intertwining Hebrew Letters. This  tool represents HaShem's mercy, yet only if you know how to utilize it.

Here is a link to learn more about the Shiluv too and how to achieve it, in time.

The DNA Tool:
There is still an opportunity to change the DNA of the year until Tevet according to the Kabbalists. From Tevet until Tishrai it is more difficult yet still possible.

Yes it is more difficult than doing this on Yom Kippur yet it still can be done. To do this requires us to continue our Teshuvah

Astrology
Sidereal Astrology:
The New Moon of Iyar is in Pisces. The moon is also conjunct Uranus. As we know, aspects dealing with the outer 3 planets apply to people who have grown spiritually to the level of the Children of Israel. These aspects will continue the long term trend of leaving outdated belief systems behind. Also looking to being open to new ideas regarding freedom.

Mercury will start leaving retrograde and start its foreward movement this week as well. Remember the first week of forward movement is just covering the area of retrograde so that it will still have some lingering impact.

This is the first week of the month of Iyar. This is a week to make plans that relate to the energy of Iyar. The energy of Iyar is healing. All healing begins in the head. The head relates to the Sefirah of Chochmah.

Since the new moon remains in Pisces, the positive aspect of Pisces is the possibility of accepting what is. Once one accepts what is, their intuition becomes stronger and they know where to wage their battles. It also allows for the beginning of serenity since one leaves behind the supposed unjustness in their lives and accepts inner peace as the natural state of themselves.

Per Sidereal Astrology: There was a lunar eclipse Wednesday January 31 that was in the sign of Cancer - Sartan. This happened on the full moon day and close to the north node which means the effects will last all through the year and even into additional years.

The effects that will start small and grow over a few years are the traits of protection and setting boundaries. It will also have an influence on fears.
Fears about protection and fear as in Awe of HaShem.

Use the tool of Binding by Striking to navigate these extreme up and down movements associated with the emotions of Awe - Love - Fear - Hiding and Anger.

The 72 Names come from 3 verses - Exodus Chapter 14 Verses 19 - 21. The Zohar tells how to form these 3 verses into 2 sets of 3 letter sequences. These Names are utilized as meditative tools and Kavenah when saying the Shema Israel Prayer.
