SCTPO Staff Visits Port, Learns About Growth and Expansion
FDOT Central Florida   District 5 Secretary, Mike Shannon, and his team,   Representative Rene "Coach P" Plasencia , FDOT administrators, and representatives from the Space Coast TPO visited the Port on April 16 for a tour and an update on the Port's growth.

They learned about the increase in cruise and cargo operations and discussed the land/water infrastructure projects and needs for the future Port of tomorrow. More photos
Seminole County, FDOT District Five Test Autonomous Connected-Vehicle Communication Hardware
In preparation for autonomous and connected vehicles, Seminole County Traffic Operations and FDOT District 5 have partnered to test hardware that will be used to communicate information between traffic control devices (signals) and vehicles.

SCTPO staff attended a tour and demonstration of the test lab in Seminole County. Participants got to see various configurations of the equipment from several different manufacturers and hear about some of the challenges and opportunities that they face.
 
In the coming years, more auto manufacturers will be selling vehicles that will be able to display signal information for drivers as well as communicate with the cars around them in order for drivers to make better, safer decisions.   
Florida Tech Hosts Public Transportation Expert, Jarrett Walker
On Tuesday, April 3 rd , over 100 students, community members, transportation professionals, and elected officials attended the Florida Institute of Technology's, F. Alan Smith Distinguished Lecture Series. This installment of the series featured Jarrett Walker, PhD.

Jarrett Walker, PhD, is a transit planner who focuses on policy and design. He authored Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives (Island Press, 2011) and publishes a blog HumanTransit.org .   He has worked in multiple cities throughout the world and now runs a consulting firm, Jarrett Walker & Associates.

The evening's lecture focused on freedom in transportation choices, planning, and the idea of developing cities to better serve transit systems, not personal automobiles. New technologies and their potential positive and negative impacts were also discussed. FIT plans to continue to offer lectures on transportation through the F. Alan Smith Distinguished Lecture Series.
