Sermon: Jonathan Morris
Peace Director of Music Ministries

Awakening Our Wonder:
"Soothe a Savage"

Scripture: Psalm 40:1-11

The 17th century poet and playwright, William Congreve, originated the saying, "Music hath the charms to soothe a savage breast" (often misquoted as "beast"). The play goes on to say "... to soften rocks or bend a knotted oak." Indeed, music is known to have a powerful affect on our moods with its ability to literally "move" us. The Psalmist proclaims that God can give us a new song, bringing us out of a "miry bog." Today we remember that attention to our music "playlists" can offer a transformative daily spiritual practice.
Meet Our New Director of Student Ministries
Hello and greetings to you, future Peace family!

My name is Katherine Bomgaars and I will be joining you as the new Director of Student Ministries starting on June 4, 2018. I am originally from a small town in northwest Iowa called Sheldon and I grew up with my parents, two older sisters and a younger brother. My faith has always been important to me throughout each stage of life, but I did not really develop my faith in Jesus as "my own" until high school. I have a passion for working with young people and walking alongside them as we discover together how God is working in the world and how we fit into what God is already doing!

I am currently finishing my undergraduate studies at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. I will graduate this May with degrees in Religion and Spanish, both of which I have enjoyed studying, along with being very involved with choir and music at Wartburg! My favorite hobbies include singing, reading, eating, laughing, socializing, traveling to new places (I've been to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Europe and Chile!), and talking about deep subjects that stimulate the mind! I greatly look forward to meeting and growing in faith not only with the youth at Peace, but also with the congregation at large!

Thank you for being so welcoming to me as a congregation during this time of transition. I sincerely believe that God has directed this beautiful partnership and look forward to seeing how He works within us all. You all have been in my thoughts and prayers for many weeks now, and will continue to be!

May God bless you! ¡Que Dios les bendiga!
Katherine

Free Joy Workshop - May 12
As humans, we often use the term "joy" as a synonym for happiness. But as a "fruit" of the Spirit, (Galatians 5: 22-24) true Joy is awakened in us as we grow in the image of our Lord Jesus. In his experiential workshop "Awakening the Joy Within", Tom Acey presents a practical guide to us to direct us in our daily lives to live a joyful life. An experienced facilitator and workshop creator, Tom has presented the Joy Workshop here at Peace several times over the past few years. He will be presenting another workshop on Saturday, May 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m . Whether you are a new participant or one who has experienced the Joy Workshop in the past, come and discover a transformation of your mind that the Apostle Paul refers to in Romans 12:2. Please sign up on the table in the back of the sanctuary. Questions? 407-791-3424 or email [email protected] .

Help Us Raise the Roof!
As with any building, our church has needed care and attention through the years. Thanks to the generous support of our members and friends who have donated their skills, time and finances, Peace has been blessed with many recent renovations and upgrades. Yet, there are still areas of our church home that need immediate attention-the most urgent need being the church roof.

Following Hurricane Irma, our Trustee Committee identified dozens of small leaks that damaged interior ceiling tiles. Multiple roof inspections and estimates have given us the same news. The roof must be replaced (preferably before the next hurricane season) and the cost will be around $80,000. The winds from the storm were simply too much for 13 year old roof shingles already weakened by time and the Florida heat. Unfortunately, our hurricane insurance deductible is over $100,000 and the current roof is no longer under its original warranty.

Peace is blessed to be completely debt free, but we find ourselves facing a large expense that wasn't included within our normal church operating budget. Please pray about this roof project and what you can do to support it--any gift, large or small will help. Donations may be made online at www.peaceumcorlando.org or via cash or check (please write ROOF on the memo line or envelope). Help us raise the new roof!

Year to date we have raised $27,500!
