AIM plans homeless apartments in Elmira
AIM is seeking state funding to renovate this property at 911 Stowell St. in Elmira
into an 18-unit apartment complex for people with disabilities who are homeless.
AIM Independent Living Center is planning an 18-unit apartment complex in Elmira for people with disabilities who are homeless.
 
AIM is seeking competitive state funding to renovate the 15,894-square-foot former American Red Cross building at 911 Stowell St., near Elmira College.
 
Edger Enterprises, an Elmira Heights-based construction firm, would renovate the building.
 
The project would create 18 single-occupancy apartments for people who are homeless, specifically frail or disabled seniors, veterans with disabilities, and people with intellectual, developmental or physical disabilities.
 
The building would have a community room, common kitchen and laundry room.
 
AIM has secured state funding to have staff on site to provide support services, including social, educational and recreational opportunities. The project is expected to create five or six new jobs.

If capital funding is secured, construction would likely begin in early 2019.
AIM to host summer camps for teens,
young adults with developmental disabilities
AIM will host day camps for teenagers and young adults with
developmental disabilities in Schuyler, Steuben and Chemung counties this summer. 
AIM will offer week-long summer day camps for young adults ages 14 to 21 with developmental disabilities.

The camps will be offered June 25-29 in Schuyler County, July 23-27 in Steuben County and Aug. 20-24 in Chemung County. They run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, with lunch provided. Space is limited, and the registration deadline is June 19.

The camps focus on building social skills and independent living skills, and will include community outings and fun activities. 

Topics of the camps include getting to know new people, staying safe during peer pressure, exploring careers, how to treat wildlife, and how to travel safely in the community

The camps will include trips to the Corning Museum of Glass and the Brick Tavern Museum in Montour Falls to learn about local history. Participants will also visit a local ice cream shop to find out what a summer job is like.

Each week will conclude with a picnic with games and food.

Participants must live at home and have eligibility with the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). OPWDD Family Support Services provides funding for the camps.

Marine Corps League donates pediatric mobility equipment to TRAID Program

The Edward J. Brewer Marine Corps League Detachment 458 recently donated $1,200 worth of pediatric mobility equipment to AIM Independent Living Center.

AIM will use the equipment for its TRAID Program (Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities). This program provides free loans of assistive equipment and technology for people with disabilities. 

The equipment purchased for AIM by the Marine Corps League is brand-new and includes a wheelchair, a rollator, three posterior walkers, and a bathing chair for children.

The Edward J. Brewer Marine Corps League Detachment 458 is the Chemung County chapter of the Marine Corps League, a national veterans organization. 
Gold honored as Employee of the Month
Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold has been selected as AIM's Employee of the Month for June.

She is a Medicaid service coordinator for people with developmental disabilities.

"Jamie is a strong advocate for the individuals and families she works with, reaching out to assist in any way she can, no matter what it is," one person who nominated her wrote. "She is always there to provide support to her coworkers and truly puts her heart into all she does."

In other news, AIM recently added several new employees to the staff:

Brooke Bennett is the director of human resources.

Sara Rockwell-Smith is an outreach and enrollment specialist in the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program.

Ashley Iurilli is a specialist in the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program.

Kellie Burrell is an employment specialist.

Katie Haslund is a support broker for people with developmental disabilities.

Michelle Jones is a direct support professional for people with developmental disabilities.
