City of Birmingham, MI
Old Woodward Reconstruction Project Update - 5/1/18
As part of the enhancements to the City's underground infrastructure during the Old Woodward Reconstruction Project, contractors are preparing to begin connecting buildings to the new water main system on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 and Thursday, May 3, 2018. Work will be focused on Old Woodward Ave., north of Maple Rd.

Wednesday, May 2 -
System connections will be made at Willits St. and Hamilton Ave.  The following buildings are anticipated to incur temporary water shut down for about a two hour period:
  • Palladium Building (including all tenant spaces)
  • Comerica (both the older and newer buildings)
  • 221-283 Hamilton Ave. (north side)
Thursday, May 3 -
All buildings on the west side of  Old Woodward Avenue from (101  to  265 N. Old Woodward Ave .) will have water shut down intermittently to allow for connection to the new system.  A water shut down is also planned for the Panera building ( 100 N. Old Woodward Ave .).  Most water shut downs will be for a short time period, however, all customers should be prepared for as much as a two - hour time window in the event of difficulties. No building closures are anticipated in order for this work to be completed.

Additional detailed information about water connections will be provided on a regular basis as the project advances.  All customers are advised that underground construction can result in unplanned obstacles and problems that cannot be predicted. Given the fluidity of the work, the City will do its best to complete the connection process as fast as possible and at the most convenient time possible given the nature of a particular business. The City thanks you for your patience and understanding as we get as we get through this process, working toward building a new, more reliable water system to service the downtown for decades to come.

Finally, on Thursday May 3, work is planned at the Willits St. intersection.  In order to safely complete this work, eastbound Willits St. will be narrowed to one lane during periods of the day.  The goal will be to return it to two lanes prior to the afternoon rush hour period.
