Suicide: Being Part of the Solution

The week of June 4th was a difficult week. Like many of you, I was shocked when I learned Kate Spade had taken her own life.  I was traveling on June 5th and learned the news when I received a text message from a Crisis Center of Tampa Bay staff member.  It just so happened my phone was in one of my favorite hand-bags, an all-black Kate Spade that my husband, Steve, gave to me as a gift on our 1st wedding anniversary.

I had followed Kate Spade's career since 2000 and was a great admirer of her as a fashion designer and business women.  I suppose I felt a sort of kinship with her since she was just a few years older than me. Emma Finds Confidence Through Her Safety Plan

Though 19-year-old Emma only recently called the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for help, she had struggled with suicidal thoughts from age 11. They were always in the corner of her mind. She had started to feel numb to them.

Emma's call to the suicide line was answered by Zoey, an intervention specialist trained in providing trauma informed care.

Sexual Assault Services Receives FCASV Recertification

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay's Sexual Assault Services has been recertified by the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence (FCASV) for a two-year term to serve as the sole provider of forensic sexual assault victim services in Hillsborough County for ages 13 and up.

FCASV serves as a resource to the state of Florida on sexual violence issues by providing information, assistance and leadership on all aspects of sexual violence. Recertification from FCASV confirms the Crisis Center is the county's rape crisis center and provides the highest quality of services to all clients.

Last year, Sexual Assault Services provided forensic exams to 360 clients and advocacy to 652 survivors within Hillsborough County.

It's Time to Recruit Your Run/Walk Team!
The 2018 SpeakUp5k will be at Al Lopez Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. The event is organized by the CKG Foundation, which empowers teens and their families to proactively take care of their mental health and seek help when they need it. You can learn more about the CKG Foundation by clicking HERE.

SpeakUp5k entry fees and sponsor dollars help fund Gateway Services at the Crisis Center, where teens and adults in the community can connect to emotional support and community resources through 2-1-1.

Registration fees increase after June 30. You can sign up TODAY as an individual walker/runner, or form a team

On Tuesday, June 5, the Crisis Center sent a survey via email. We're looking for your feedback on Crisis Center services and agency communication. Your opinion is valued and appreciated! If you haven't done so yet, please take a couple minutes to complete the survey.

Free Document Shredding: June 18th         

Do you have documents you need to shred? You can help the Crisis Center and also get 3 copy paper boxes or kitchen trash bags shredded for FREE by Shred360 on Monday, June 18th. Just make a donation to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay at the "shred-a-thon".  Come to the AMC Highwoods 20 (18002 Highwoods Preserve Pkwy/Tampa) from 11am-1pm.

Beer & Bow Ties: Friday, September 14th
Beer and Bow Ties was founded out of a passion to help provide resources for suicide prevention and awareness. The fourth annual event will be from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14th at The Orlo in Tampa.

 Tickets for Beer and Bow Ties are now on sale, and you can take advantage of early bird pricing before July 4th. General admission is $75 and VIP is $100. You'll enjoy an evening of local craft beer, local cuisine and specialty cocktails, as well as music by DJ Jonny Torres.
