It's inevitable! We love to plant new plants, to appreciate their beauty, and to watch the pollinators and wildlife that visit. But with those joys come garden maintenance and management. Join us for a virtual discussion with Lyn Rutherford (Sustainable Landscaper with the City of Chattanooga) and other landscape professionals to learn more about how to manage everything that's growing in our gardens.

The Certificate in Native Plants program is designed to expand students' knowledge of botany, ecology, conservation and uses of native flora in the southeastern United States. The CNP offers a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on learning and guided hikes. Participants are required to complete four core classes, eight electives, and 40 hours of volunteering for approved native plant projects.

CORE Class (6 credits)
This class will focus on how soil and water interactions lay the foundation for supporting a functional, healthy landscape. We will frame our conversation around the five soil forming factors of parent material, climate, biota, topography, and time, and take a look at how each of these is at work in our landscape. We will use technology tools but also simply get our hands dirty to help uncover information that will help in management decisions.
Andrea Ludwig, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Ecological Engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

The ELA is offering a webinar series geared to landscape professionals, gardeners, and anyone who stewards the land. The series is presented through collaboration of the Ecological Landscape Alliance (ELA), the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council (CCLC), ReScape, the American Public Gardens Association (APGA) and the Deep Roots Kansas City. There are native sedges and grasses that have a similar fine textured foliage, naturally low-growing habit, and are adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions for greater installation success.
