It's inevitable! We love to plant new plants, to appreciate their beauty, and to watch the pollinators and wildlife that visit. But with those joys come garden maintenance and management. Join us for a virtual discussion with Lyn Rutherford (Sustainable Landscaper with the City of Chattanooga) and other landscape professionals to learn more about how to manage everything that's growing in our gardens.
Upcoming CNP Classes

The Certificate in Native Plants program is designed to expand students' knowledge of botany, ecology, conservation and uses of native flora in the southeastern United States. The CNP offers a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on learning and guided hikes. Participants are required to complete four core classes, eight electives, and 40 hours of volunteering for approved native plant projects.

Visit www.TNValleyWildOnes.org/CNP for more information.  Classes are open to Wild Ones members and non-members, whether or not you are pursuing the certificate.  Classes fill quickly and pre-registration is required.

Soils & Water
Instructor: Andrea Ludwig, PhD
Saturday, November 14, 2020
9:00am - 12:30pm
Online via Zoom
CORE Class (6 credits)

This class will focus on how soil and water interactions lay the foundation for supporting a functional, healthy landscape. We will frame our conversation around the five soil forming factors of parent material, climate, biota, topography, and time, and take a look at how each of these is at work in our landscape. We will use technology tools but also simply get our hands dirty to help uncover information that will help in management decisions.

Andrea Ludwig, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Ecological Engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Interesting Information
Replacing a Turf Lawn
with Native Alternatives
For those looking to maintain a more traditional look while installing their native plant lawn alternative, there are look-alike native plants. There are native sedges and grasses that have a similar fine textured foliage, naturally low-growing habit, and are adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions for greater installation success.

In this post from Northcreek Nurseries, learn about several species of grasses and sedges that may be suitable for replacing turf lawn.

Jelly fungus
One of the most remarkable features of these fungi is their ability to absorb as much as 60 times their weight in water. When dried, jelly fungi become hard and shriveled; when exposed to water, they return to their original form.
