End of the Year
Principal's Newsletter
"Exit With Pride"

Dr. Peter Monaghan, Principal

Glenbard West Community -

Please take a moment to read through our final newsletter.  It contains all of the important information regarding our end of the year finals as well as the 2018-2019 back-to-school days.  Included as well are many of our student recognitions leading up to the end of the year. All of us should be very proud of the many accomplishments in the areas of academics, athletics and leadership. As principal, I have noticed the important role that seniors play in setting the tone for our school. The class of 2018 has done a remarkable job in modeling and mentoring our underclassmen. Our staff would not be able to do the things we do without their leadership.  We look forward to spending the next three weeks with this top-notch group of students and will definitely miss them as they head off to their post-high school destinations.

Next week is recognized as "Teacher Appreciation Week."   It is no secret that Glenbard West teachers represent the very best in terms of being student-centered, utilizing progressive teaching strategies, maintaining high expectations and providing supports for our students.  Our teachers are constantly promoting students and advocating in their interests. I can guarantee that a teacher played a role in every single student success listed in this newsletter. Our teachers not only do an outstanding job inside the classroom, but they are often involved with co-curriculars throughout our campus. We pride ourselves on working hard to have teachers involved with athletics and activities.  Finally, our teachers help us to promote the ethos and spirit of Glenbard West. Thank you Glenbard West teachers for supporting our students and the mission of our school!

And finally, as we wind up the school year, I also wanted to be sure and thank all of our parent volunteers.  This last Saturday, West held a very successful prom followed by a record-breaking post prom event led by parent volunteers.  This is just the latest example of the parent power we have at Glenbard West. Whether it's Boosters, West Nation, AMP, Friends of Forensics or any of the less formal ways that parents support our school, our success would not be possible without their commitment.  Thank you parent volunteers and everyone else who contributes to support Glenbard West.

This spring our club raised $1800 for a water tank
for our pen pal school in Kenya.
Glenbard West's club Global Connect is a club focused on providing partnership, guidance and idea exchange by connecting students from West with students in developing countries. The goal of this club is to create a community of students both here in Glen Ellyn and in developing countries who can share ideas and understanding of each other's cultures. In addition, we try our best to support the material needs of the school to help foster better learning environments. This year we worked with an organization to connect our school with Mindoni Secondary School in Kenya. We have been exchanging letters all year and just finished a fundraiser where different classes competed to raise the most funds. In these classes, mostly Human Geography with some Health and Biology classes, students became involved, competitive, and generous with donations and participation. Our final total reached $1800 and this money will go to purchase and install a water tank at Mindoni Secondary School in Kenya, Africa. This tank will allow students to come to school versus staying home to collect water. Water is something we take for granted and to be able to provide clean water for students across the world is fantastic. We are so proud of everyone who participated in helping us achieve and surpass our goal.

Senior Parents: There are three weeks left to celebrate your graduating senior and t ell your student how proud they make you through a yearbook recognition ad.   Select a cherished photo(s), choose a layout and add your personal message.  Ads due May 15th.

Art students recently capped off yet another successful year with Glenbard's 58th Annual Student Art Show. Wellness, preparedness key to a safe learning environment
The tragedy in Parkland, Florida was followed by inspirational scenes of high school students across the country taking a stand for school safety. The tragedy and students' articulate expression of the change they want to see must prompt us to continue doing all we can to provide a safe learning environment.

In Glenbard, we make every effort to keep our students and staff safe. We have security plans in place, we review safety procedures with students and staff, and we work closely with our partners in local law enforcement.

We all can contribute to the goal of providing a safe learning environment. We encourage our students to tell a trusted adult if they see something wrong, whether in school, on social media or elsewhere. The mantra of "see something, say something" is key to increasing safety.

Social Emotional Learning
Our students' social emotional well-being is another element of a safe learning environment. Young people may be managing a wide range of challenges, including:
  • Social/emotional challenges
  • Dependency on alcohol or other drugs
  • Family matters, such as divorce
  • Mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety
Our school psychologists, social workers and other student services personnel provide a variety of social emotional supports and can assist families and provide resources to support students' overall wellness.

Let's look at some of the ways we address students' well-being:
  • Social Emotional Learning Competencies - We focus on students' social emotional learning competencies of:
    • Self-Awareness
    • Social Awareness
    • Self-Management
    • Responsible Decision-Making
    • Relationship Skills
  • Semi-annual Youth Leaders Community Forum - brings together our assistant principals for student services and a variety of professionals who work with our students outside of the school day, including representatives of youth counseling services, faith-based organizations, DuPage County agencies, sender schools, YMCAs, libraries, park districts and more.
  • Wellness Committee - A group of faculty and community volunteers focused on supporting goals related to student nutrition education, physical activity and social and emotional needs, as well as wellness programs for staff.
  • Live Life Well Week - focused on mindfulness activities related to students' responsible decision making, self-awareness and self-management, as well as activities for self-care and getting involved at school.
  • Glenbard Parent Series - In November, Brenda Nelson presented Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning: An Approach for Sailing the Rough Seas of Adolescence, and in January, Shimi Kang presented The Myth of Normal: Understanding Anxiety, Depression and Addiction.
  • Illinois Youth Survey - This survey provides local, relevant data to assist with school planning on health and social issues.
  • Wellness Expo - Important part of our September health fair.
With more than 8,100 students in our care, we draw upon the collective experience, wisdom and unique perspectives of a diverse group of community partners to provide a safe learning environment. Parents and guardians are key partners in this work. Thank you for your continued support of our students, faculty and staff.

This has been another great year for Glenbard West athletics as we move into a busy and hectic time of year with spring sports.   Once again we have over 750 student athletes participating in spring sports this season and thank you to all of our coaches for providing great opportunities and life-long learning to our student athletes. They are exceptionally dedicated to their team and take great pride in being a Hilltopper! At times, weather dictates changes and reschedules and we ask everyone to stay up to date with all changes on our athletic website at http://il.8to18.com/glenbardwest for the most recent updates and game schedules. Please make it a point to attend a variety of our spring sports where you can see our student athletes perform at a high level. We look forward to hosting a variety of upcoming events including the IHSA Boys Lacrosse Sectional on Memorial Field during the week of May 21 through May 24.

The summer will be here before long and I would encourage everyone to enroll in Glenbard West summer camps through the Glen Ellyn Park District. The complete list of camps can be found on our website along with the Glen Ellyn Park District website at www.gepark.org.
There is truly something for everyone and we encourage everyone to get involved here at Glenbard West.

Please note that fall sports will begin for Football and Boys and Girls Golf on Monday August 6, 2018. All other fall sports include Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball, Girls Tennis, and Girls Field Hockey begin on Wednesday August 8, 2018. In order to participate, registration must be completed on the parent portal for PowerSchool which includes the Athletic Code agreement and concussion awareness agreement. News from Student Services

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, it is important to make sure that each student finishes as strong as he or she can. Below are a few tips to consider with your student.

1. Set Goals:   Setting goals, both personally and academically, will help your student stay on track. Have your student create their own achievable goals and encourage them to try their absolute best!

2. Stay Organized:   Staying organized will prevent your student from losing or forgetting assignments or due dates. By doing so, your student can be best prepared for upcoming final projects and tests.

3. Do Not Put Off Responsibilities:   Slacking and procrastination are ways that your student may avoid their academic tasks. Putting-off school-related responsibilities will leave your student scrambling and stressed last minute. Encourage your student to keep their eye on the prize and complete responsibilities right away.

4. Stay Motivated and Maintain a Positive Attitude:   In order to beat summer fever and "senioritis", help your student to visualize the finish line and their goals.  Make your student aware of all the positive experiences that await them at the end of the year.

5. Take Time To Take Care of Yourself:  Be sure to help your student to recognize and reward their achievements along the way. Taking time out of their day for a mental break by doing something pleasurable is key for stress management. Taking breaks is also helpful for your student's mental health and attention span. Encourage your student to to eat, exercise, and sleep well.
