Dear Members,
There are a lot of items in the newsletter this month. Please take some time to review them. Part of what makes Washburn County a great place to live and work is the sense of community that we share. Some of the events in this newsletter do more than just bring community together.
I would like to highlight the Inspire Business sign-up portion of the newsletter for you. If you attended our banquet this year, you saw a presentation on Inspire. Inspire is a computer program that will be utilized in classrooms all around Wisconsin, and specifically in the schools in Washburn County. Inspire is a program that at it's most basic function connects students with businesses/careers that they might be interested in going into. Businesses can be involved as much as they want to, but what this program also does is allows students to connect with the employers to ask them what their career is like, what are the best avenues to being hired for a job with that employer or in that career, and many other things. The idea is to let students know what is available in their home area for careers and opportunities. This program will work best when there is a large database of employers and businesses involved. I'm proud to say that the WCEDC is one of the first businesses that signed up in the area and I encourage you to attend the sign-up event listed below.
As far as business activity in the area, I'm pleased to inform you that our office has seen an increase in inquiries into starting or expanding businesses over the last month. It's a busy time, but one that we welcome. Tourism a huge industry in our county and as the traffic patterns increase and it takes a little longer to get from one end of town to the next, please remember that this is a good thing for all of us.
Finally, to all of our members, please note that our Annual Board meeting will be on Tuesday, June 19th, at 7:30am at the WCEDC Office.

Youth Apprenticeship (YA) is a highly successful talent acquisition strategy in which employers hire high school juniors or seniors for a one or two-year apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship, the student continues toward high school graduation and takes courses related to the profession as a way of enhancing what is being learned on the job. The YA Program is coordinated locally by regional consortia and overseen by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD). Each consortium typically includes several participating high schools. Employers may hire from more than one high school and even work with multiple consortia to meet their hiring needs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Connect Your Business to Your Future Workforce: Inspire Northward Business Sign Up Day scheduled in Spooner, WI
After the well-received launch of Inspire Northward at the Washburn County Economic Development Corporation's Annual Banquet, the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board and Visions Northwest will be hosting a Business Sign Up Day in Spooner, WI. Inspire Northward is part of a statewide initiative dedicated to providing a direct connection between students and local businesses through an online platform similar to Facebook and LinkedIn. Through Inspire Northward's online platform, employers can engage with students via online discussion boards and also coordinate company tours, career fairs, and a variety of other work experiences. This done through Career Cruising, a career assessment and planning software, being used statewide by K-12 school districts.
The Business Sign Up day will be hosted on Monday, June 18th, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Northwest Regional Planning Commission's Conference Room (1400 South River Street; Spooner, WI 54801). Staff will be available to walk business owners or other business leadership through the easy process of creating a Company Profile on Inspire Northward. No appointment is necessary to attend! Businesses are welcome to stop in at any time during this time slot to sign up. The easy process takes no longer than 15 minutes.
To sign up simply bring knowledge of your company and a payment method to pay for a nominal $5.00 Background Check Processing Fee. Accepted forms of payment during the Business Sign Up Day include credit cards, check, or cash. For the safety of the students who are using Inspire Northward, it is required that anyone on the platform must pass a background check prior to getting access.
This statewide initiative is being deployed locally in Northwest Wisconsin by the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board and Visions Northwest with support from Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and many local and regional partners, including the Washburn County Economic Development Corporation.
