Lehi's Purple Typewriter Creative Writing Club had the opportunity to go to a writing conference for teens called Teen Author Boot Camp. This conference is one of the biggest of its kind in the U.S. and gives teens the opportunity to workshop with published authors, literary agents, and others in the writing/publishing industry. TABC also hosts a writing contest open to teens 13-18 called the First Chapter Contest. Several of our students entered, and Sarah Stanley won honorable mention in this contest.
Keeping Teens Safe Online
Sponsored by School Community Council
It seems that now more than ever it is impossible to function without the internet in our homes. This presents a problem: How do we provide our families with the access they need, while still protecting them from harmful images, videos, messages and other media that are so prevalent in cyberspace? To help with that, we’ve compiled a list of information filters. Here are our favorites in no particular order. (It should be noted that we do not endorse any company listed here, nor do we guarantee the products effectiveness. We are just trying to help you find options.)
The Circle with Disney - This is a small device that you plug into your router that filters the internet. You don’t have any yearly fees, unless you wish to have premium services.
Netnanny - This is software that you buy as a subscription and you pay per the number of computers you want to be protected.
Surfie - This is an app with a monthly subscription that will send you alerts when your child is online where or when they shouldn't be and also shows their location.
Qustodio - This is subscription computer software and an app that gives you lots of options and abilities to refine filters and schedules. This program offers the most control for the price.
Norton Family Premier - This is a well known company and they provide a subscription service that is great for those who know their way around a computer and are looking for a way to have specific control over content, privacy, and scheduling.
CleanRouter - This product is a wifi router and a subscription service that provides filters, security, and scheduling functions.
These are some of the higher rated options, but every family has different needs and computer abilities. We encourage you to do research of your own to find out which product will best help keep your family safe.
