Make plans to join us for an exciting day on the water, on Saturday, April 21st, as we explore the tidal creeks around St. Simons Island! Get all the information you need to sign up for Down to the River to Pray here. |
I have always loved being in nature, and from a young age I was always sensitive to matters that impacted the environment. I don't really know why. We weren't an environmentally progressive family in any particular sense, nor did I spend too much time in the woods or at the beach in such a way that it attuned me to nature, it was just a part of my interests from a young age. When I first went to college, I was an environmental science major. I changed majors for two reasons; one, I ended up not liking chemistry, and two, because science is hard to excel at, when you have a nearly full-time job at the same time.
Regardless, I've always loved being in nature and keeping an eye on nature, which brings me to this Rambling, in which I hope to highlight two upcoming events. First, on April 21, a Saturday afternoon, there will be an event called, Down to the River to Pray, here on St. Simons. It is an afternoon of paddling on local waters followed by a potluck and Eucharist here at Christ Church. The event is sponsored by our Diocesan Creation Care Committee and by Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL), an ecumenical organization that works with churches to promote care of creation in various and easy ways. One of the things they do is give free energy audits to churches in order to help them find ways to reduce their spending on utilities. We received one of their audits a couple of years ago and welcomed their strategies to cut our costs.

Colonial Worship Service - This Sunday, April 15th, at St. Ignatius |
|
Glynn County's 13th Annual Patriots Day Celebration is being held on St. Simons Island the weekend of April 13-15th. The
celebration
is sponsored by the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution; the Brunswick Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution; Fort Frederica Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution; and the Marshes of Glynn Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. The celebration culminates in the Colonial Worship Service, which is being held at Christ Church's St. Ignatius Chapel on Sunday morning, April 15th, at 9:00 am. This worship service is set in a historical context during the time-frame of the American Revolution (1775-1783). Many worshipers are dressed in Colonial attire, and the hymns, anthem and sermon reflect the culture and sentiments of America in the 18th century. All are welcome to attend. Period attire is optional.

ECW Scholarship |
|
A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year.
Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.
"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.
Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here
and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

African Team Ministries |
|
African Team Ministries will have a
display
of beautiful crafts available for purchase for the next two Sundays (March 15th and 22nd) in Christ Church Parish House. African Team Ministries is a Christian ministry working as an intermediary between African and American churches. They provide funding for orphan and refugee relief missions and evangelism in East Africa.
The support they receive is sent directly to partnering Bishops to provide school fees, tuition, books, and uniforms. This support ensures that the children receive an education and a measure of stability needed to rebuild their minds. Currently, there are children registered for sponsorship in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Your purchase of crafts and jewelry will help fund their education. For more information, visit africanteamministries.org.

Docents and Greeters Needed in Christ Church! |
|
Christ Church needs docents and greeters! As the team of volunteer docents has diminished over the last few months, due to illness and retirements, so have the number of days we are able to keep the church open to visitors.
Currently, we have a skeleton crew of volunteers to man the church Tuesday through Sunday in the afternoons. After March, we will definitely need some additional folks to help. You can assist by volunteering to docent once a month from 2 to 5 pm. There is a training session before docents embark on this wonderful opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church. Contact: Fred Collins at fredwcollins@yahoo.com to become a docent.

Guild member, Pam Hamilton, will discuss her life as a physician, particularly in the days before it was common for women to become doctors. It should be really interesting!
At the March meeting, discussion centered on how to disperse the funds from the Oyster Roast and it was decided to donate to the Compass Rose Society, Hospice of the Golden Isles, the Farm at Oatlands and Very Special Arts, Glynn County. Some interesting programs are also in the plans for next year. The Guild will hold its Spring Party in May, and details will be available at next Tuesday's meeting.
