Kelley Buchheister is an assistant professor in child, youth and family studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Her research explores early learning in mathematics and examines children’s opportunities to engage in mathematical thinking through high-quality interactions in both formal and informal settings.

What is the future direction of your early childhood research?
"My research continues to explore high-quality interactions that promote young children's mathematical thinking. This involves research and teaching related to equitable opportunities to learn, understanding young children's metarepresentational competence, and enhancing prospective and practicing teachers' strategies for developing children's logico-mathematical reasoning."
Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on?
"Dr. Rachel Schachter and I are starting a project funded through the Layman Foundation. We are developing a 'train the coach approach,' which is a coaching model focused on enriching professional learning experiences. We are using the funding to develop, implement and analyze the effectiveness of the model in the context of early mathematics."
How can effective collaborations enhance the research enterprise?
"
Learning how to positively engage in effective collaboration is vital to research. Quality communications enrich the thinking of individuals on a project by providing explicit feedback, asking clarifying questions and generating new hypotheses. Without sharing the combined expertise, a project cannot achieve the same levels of success it would from the collaborative efforts."

OPRE Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families
OPRE is accepting applications for a Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families grant, to lead and support investigation of the needs of Hispanic populations served by ACF and promising approaches to promote social and economic well-being among low-income Hispanic families.
This award would be for a 60-month project period with five 12-month budget periods (i.e., October 2018 - September 2023).
Up to $1,050,000 may be awarded for each budget period.
Funds for the Center for Research on Hispanic Children and Families Grant are available to states, and public and other organizations and agencies which have research as a primary organizational activity.

American Psychological Foundation Kenneth B. and Mamie P. Clark Fund
The Kenneth B. and Mamie P. Clark Fund supports research and demonstration activities that promote the understanding of the relationship between self-identity and academic achievement with an emphasis on children in grades K-8.
One $10,000 research grant is available with a one-year project period.

The STEM + C Program focuses on research and development of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to th
e integration of computing within STEM teaching and learning for pre-K-12 students in both formal and informal settings. The STEM + C program supports research on how students learn to think computationally to solve interdisciplinary problems in science and mathematics.

The NIH Director's Pioneer Award supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose highly innovative and potentially transformative approaches to major challenges in the biomedical or behavioral sciences toward the goal of enhancing human health. Applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and in any topic relevant to the broad mission of NIH are welcome
To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect substantially different scientific directions from those already being pursued in the investigators research program or elsewhere.
