The ILO, created by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, is a Geneva-based United Nations agency that brings together governments, employers and workers of 187 countries, to set labor standards such as such as hours of work, compensation and wage negotiations, social security, occupational safety and health and many other issues key to business. In 1934, through the efforts of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins, the U.S. joined the ILO to work collaboratively on these fundamental business and work issues.
