FMA Message From the President: Relationships are the Key to Our Success
By Michael Patete, MD FMA President
|
|
Physicians know that the relationships we build with our patients are the foundation for helping them achieve better health.
We can never guarantee outcomes, but when our patients place their trust in us and adhere to our medical advice and treatment plans, they are much more likely to live healthier lives. We earn that trust by demonstrating our empathy, our dedication and our knowledge. In a sense, we are in the relationship and communication business. Every day, we are utilizing those skills with our patients.
Now, we must use our skills to build relationships with legislators. Our goal is to improve the environment for practicing medicine in Florida. We know that by doing this, our patients will be the ultimate beneficiaries.
The odds of getting a pro-physician, pro-patient legislative agenda passed in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. are greatly enhanced when we have strong relationships with the elected officials whom we need to advance these ideas. It is incumbent upon all of us to take the time to get to know our legislative representatives on a personal level. To tell them our stories and share our vision for making our communities healthier.
The FMA is proud to be a diverse, purpose-driven organization that includes physicians with a range of political views. We might disagree at times about politics, but there is absolutely no disagreement about our love for the medical profession and our desire to take care of our patients. Our diversity is our strength. Our unity is our power. We must use that strength and power to defend our profession and help our patients.
