A Teen Finds Her Voice
Kayla*, 13, was being bullied at school by another girl who made her life a daily ordeal by pulling her hair in class and stealing her lunch. Upon starting counseling services in HYC’s Family Services Program, Kayla was afraid, depressed and unsure of herself. This was not the first time she had been bullied, and she didn’t think she would ever escape it; she had also endured bullying throughout elementary school. She was scared to confront her bully and feared being labeled a “tattletale”. It took time, but Kayla built a trusting bond with her HYC counselor during weekly individual counseling sessions. With her counselor’s help, Kayla learned and practiced positive communication skills. She first spoke with a teacher about what was happening, which was a huge step as it was something she was hesitant to do before.

Kayla’s confidence and communication skills continued to grow through counseling and she was able to have a non-aggressive conversation with her bully, letting her know that she does not like it when she steals her lunch and pulls her hair. With this success, Kayla’s self-esteem soared. Her positive communication style blossomed with classmates, teachers, and family. HYC is thankful for being able to help Kayla find her voice and the confidence to stand up for herself in an effective way!
