Mundi Update

Previously we reported that on December 31, 2018, without notice or cause, EAI's 18-month-old contract for the retirement of Mundi was cancelled. Our efforts to ascertain the reasons for the cancellation and seek a remedy were unsuccessful.

On February 20th, EAI CEO Carol Buckley and Board Member Leslie Schreiber went to court in Puerto Rico, seeking an immediate injunction to reinstate the contract and allow Mundi to move to Elephant Refuge North America mid-March as scheduled.

The judge ruled that the case had to be heard in civil court. As we understand the process, the remedy in civil court would be financial not a reinstatement of the contract; for that reason we decided not to pursue a civil case.

Subsequently, rumors began to circulate about another lawsuit filed in January by the municipality of Mayaquez, where Mundi resides, seeking an injunction against the governor of Puerto Rico, for ownership of Mundi.

Local media reported that the case was heard and that the judge ruled against the municipality in favor of the governor. The municipality of Mayaquez is contesting the decision.

ERNA Receives Georgia Wildlife Permit

ERNA Receives GA DNR Permit

Last month EAI reached a significant milestone when the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued the required wildlife permit to Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA). We appreciate the efforts of the Georgia DNR and are proud to display their logo alongside that of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.
ERNA Local Forestry Unit Recognized for Excellence

Decatur-Seminole County Forestry Unit

At ERNA, we know from first-hand experience that our local Decatur-Seminole County Forestry Unit is extremely skilled and vested in our community. We were fortunate to have their help with a controlled burn last year to enhance the safety of ERNA and humbled as we watched them help our neighbors in need following Hurricane Michael. We congratulate them for being named the 2018 South Georgia Co-Unit of the Year!   Read more about the Unit's work and the award.

Help Us with Finishing Touches for the Barn

With construction on the elephant barn just inches away from completion, we now turn our attention to putting the finishing touches on the interior. The items on our Barn Wish List may not sound glamorous - they include infrared heaters and controls, sinks, faucets and water heaters - but they will enable us to provide state-of-the-art care and meet every need of our elephant residents. They deserve nothing less! Thank you!

Thank You Facebook Fundraisers!

Thank you Ashleigh, Britta, Debbie, Eclipse, Grace, Hilary, Kate, Kaycee, Kirsten, Lisa and Melissa for fundraising on behalf of EAI to celebrate your birthdays and other special occasions!

Help your friends and family support your passion for elephant welfare. Instead of another pair of elephant-themed pajamas, let them donate to a cause you care about. Facebook birthday fundraisers are easy to set up and share with your family and friends to let them know that this year in lieu of gifts you would like a donation to be made to EAI.

Not your birthday? Consider hosting a fundraiser in honor of your favorite pet, family member or just because you care.
Thank you for everything you do. We would not be able to do any of this work without your continued support.
