BRASCON

The third BRASCON (Brazilian Students and Scholars Conference) was held at Ohio State on June 23 - 24, and was a great success! Previous hosts of the conference were Harvard (2016) and University of Southern California (2017).

Opening remarks were given by Gifty Ako-Adounvo, PhD, assistant vice provost for global strategies and international affairs at Ohio State. Ako-Adounvo emphasized Ohio State's internationalization efforts and highlighted the importance of the Global Gateways, including the Brazil Gateway, whose team helped bring BRASCON to Ohio State.

The first day included three keynote speakers sharing their experience in industry, innovation and science. José Pires, innovation leader, led participants through an engaging activity; Duilia de Mello, PhD, vice provost at the Catholic University of America, talked about her experience working at NASA; and Joana Felix, PhD, from Harvard, told her emotional and inspiring trajectory to overcome prejudice and poverty. There was also a panel discussion on ways to bridge leadership, entrepreneurship and science, with Marcio Resende, PhD, associate professor at the University of Florida, and Roberto Alvarez, PhD, executive director of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils, of which Ohio State is part.

"I met amazing people! In particular, two great women scientists inspired me with the impact they are having in the world: Joana Felix and Duilia de Mello," said Paula Dalcin Martins, PhD, Ohio State alumna and BRASA's (Brazilian Students Association) president. "It's incredible to see resilient, passionate and determined women doing what I want to do when I am a professor! Thank you BRASCON for the opportunity to work with you all! "

Brazil Event at the Office of International Affairs

On June 25, Jane K. Aparecido, academic relations and alumni community manager at the Brazil Gateway, spoke to Ohio State staff, faculty and students about Brazilian higher education, cultural tips on establishing partnerships, funding opportunities for research in Brazil and the Brazil Gateway's involvement in enhancing collaborations between Ohio State and Brazilian institutions.

Margo Lipps, program coordinator of international partnerships, explained where to find Ohio State's guidelines on how to start a partnership with Brazil on the Office of International Affairs website.

Over 30 attendees also enjoyed a coffee break and some Brazilian candy.

If you missed the presentation and want to know more about collaborations in Brazil, reach out to Aparecido at the Brazil Gateway.
The Brazilian Experience: Surveying Brazilian Culture through Music and Education
Students participating in the Brazilian Experience: Surveying Brazilian Culture through Music and Education abroad program was in Brazil from May 23 to June 5.

The program is designed to offer a distinctive cultural experience for undergraduate students who desire a unique global diversity component to their education. It introduces students to music, culture and Brazilian educational systems.

After two weeks of studying on the Ohio State campus in May, all members of the class traveled to Brazil and engaged in master classes, interactive music performances, observation of schools in addition to several cultural experiences in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.

Second and third year students, music majors and students with music performance experience are encouraged to apply.

BRASA Continues to Grow Strong

BRASA (Brazilian Students Association) continues to grow stronger since some Ohio State graduate students took on leadership roles in 2017 and revived the group. The organization had been inactive after many Brazilian undergraduate students, who had started its chapter on campus, left Ohio State when the Brazilian government's program, Science without Borders (CsF), was canceled.

For the past year BRASA has held monthly meetings sharing Brazilian culture with everyone who is interested on campus, partnered with the Brazil Gateway and Greater Columbus Sister Cities International - Curitiba Committee on many events, participated in its first Taste of OSU and helped bring BRASCON (Brazilian Students and Scholars Conference) to Ohio State.

The students who led these efforts are Paula Dalcin Martins, Gabriel Silveira D'Almeida (both in the Department of Microbiology) and Jacqueline Coelho Sampaio (Department of Spanish and Portuguese). They also had support from many volunteers during those events.

Martins, who was BRASA's first president since its reactivation, has recently finished her PhD at Ohio State (congratulations!) and will move to the Netherlands to work. Paula's strength, work ethic, team work and happiness will be missed by those who participate in BRASA. We are sure Jacqueline Coelho, who will step in as president, will also do a great job!

Best of luck, Paula!

Global Perspectives: Beatriz Schmidt
Schmidt is a postdoctoral researcher in psychology at the Federal University of Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil, who spent one semester at Ohio State.

I spent one semester as a visiting scholar linked to the Human Development and Family Science Program at The Ohio State University, and it was such a wonderful experience! I had the opportunity to develop great work with my faculty sponsor, Professor Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, PhD. We discussed data pertaining to my dissertation, regarding co-parenting across the transition to parenthood in Brazilian families. In co-authorship with my PhD advisor in Brazil, Professor Piccinini, we wrote articles and presented posters in scientific events held at Ohio State, like the International Scholar Research Exposition and the Education and Human Ecology Student Research Forum (you can see Professor Schoppe-Sullivan and me in the picture at one of these events).

Even before arriving at Ohio State, I felt very welcomed in my first contacts with Professor Schoppe-Sullivan and the Brazil Gateway's office. This feeling remained the whole time I spent there. The chance of engaging in events offered by the Office of International Affairs, such as the English Conversation Program, allowed me to meet friendly people from the United States and other countries, as well as to improve my English skills. Through these cross-cultural interactions encouraged by The Ohio State University, I changed my perspectives on the world. Likewise, the workshops sponsored by the Ohio Union Activities Board supported me in terms of career planning and academic growth.

Beyond my professional development, results derived from this collaborative endeavor are in line with Brazilian goals and efforts concerning the internationalization of graduate programs, given the exchange of ideas and establishment of partnership amongst researchers from different countries, aiming to enhance research quality. Therefore, I thank The CAPES Foundation for awarding me with a scholarship for the PhD internship in the United States, as well as Ohio State for enabling me to have this terrific Buckeye experience!
