Spring Newsletter 2019

A Message From Your Chapter President
Dear ACHE of MA Members,

Happy Spring and welcome to my first quarterly newsletter as your incoming Chapter President. As I begin this two-year term, I would like to gratefully acknowledge the efforts and leadership of our Immediate Past President Andrea Paciello, whose hard work and collegiality has made my transition to this role as seamless as I think it could have been. Further, I look forward to working with our entire board, a group of high energy leaders committed to the core values of ACHE to help me (and all of us) maintain, further and expand the professional standards and growth so important to today's healthcare industry. Lastly, I'd like to thank Karen Moore who as our Regent continues to work tirelessly to keep us informed and fully connected to ACHE on a national level.

As we look toward the year ahead, I'd encourage all of you to read this Spring newsletter edition closely for updates on our many events and initiatives. Whether it is the recap of an engaging 2019 Chicago Congress in early March, our upcoming Spring Conference on Friday, May 17 at the Doubletree Hotel (a "must see" event!) or our exciting Podcast Innovation Grant that we were recently honored to receive from ACHE or the many efforts of our Early Careerist Network team, there is something for everyone in our 2019 plans!

I would also like to make special note of the efforts of our Diversity and Inclusion Committee led by Carmen Kenrich. Our D&I Committee continues to do great work and in particular has proudly launched our first Annual Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award. Please read closely in this newsletter about how you can nominate worthy organizations for this honor which we will award at the May 17 Conference.

Thanks again for your commitment to ACHE MA!

Warmest regards,
John M. Fogarty, FACHE
President, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham

Professional Development
In January our panel discussed "The Top 5 Careers that Don't Exist...Yet." We had 110 attendees at the event at Shriners Hospital. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Missed the panel series?
We videotaped the panel and you can view the event by clicking here.

Mentorship Program
We had 43 total mentor-mentee matches for the 2018-2019 Program. The mentorship team looks to close out another successful year and is in the process of scheduling our 2018 closing event. The team also hosted a happy hour in February. Looking ahead to the coming year, we are planning to sustain our mentorship growth while also focusing on enhancing analytics and better understanding of the quality of our matching to improve the experience for our next go-around.

Networking
Our next networking event will be held in June, so stay tuned! The Networking Committee has a new chair Tony Mendez, (formerly on the Professional Development Committee). Tony will be looking to expand our events/community engagement in 2019. The team is exploring the idea of hosting smaller/co-located events and heavily focusing on making connections and engaging non-members on the benefits of membership.

Diversity & Inclusion Committee

ACHE of Massachusetts will present our 1st Annual Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award at our Spring Conference on Friday, May 17, 2019.

This award will recognize an organization's commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives and programs. Recipients of the award are evaluated based on the American Hospital Association and Institute for Diversity in Health Management #123Pledge principles demonstrating their dedication to improving the collection and use of race, ethnicity, GLBTQ, the wellbeing of all people and language preference data; supporting cultural competency training; increasing diversity in governance and leadership; and engaging and strengthening community partnerships.

We are accepting nominations for the award and hope you will consider nominating your organization by April 5, 2019.

ACHE Chapter Innovation Grant
Awarded to ACHE of Massachusetts

The Membership committee is excited to announce that it has been awarded a 2019 Chapter Innovation Grant for the creation of an educational podcast series. With 44% of the US population reporting that they have listened to at least one podcast, we are looking forward to piloting use of this increasingly popular medium to offer educational content on a wide variety of topics ranging from innovation to leadership to population health and beyond. Over the next year, we will develop a series of audio files which will be made available for chapter members to download and listen to at their convenience.

Ellen Mahoney and Patrick McCabe will lead this committee. If you have any ideas for speakers or topics, please email info@massache.org.

Chapter Regent Quarterly Letter
"Telling Our Stories to Lead Care"

Dear ACHE of MA Colleagues,

I am sitting here on a Sunday in my office looking for "space", time to reflect. How often can we make time for that? Usually it's difficult during the busy work week. In fact, my greatest inspirations and ideas often come when I'm on a long bike ride or sweating through an intense spin class. So ironically, even though I am "working" hard at pushing my body physically to its limits my mind (now with a sufficient number of endorphins circulating) is freed to think through enormous challenges and conflicts or generate new ideas.

I think it's particularly important for hospital executives to use stories that make an emotional connection -  especially when it comes to leading for value, quality, safety and the patient experience. A few years ago as a consultant, I was engaged to assist a group to articulate their value at bringing self-care awareness to nurses. I heard, "We can't measure it, but we know it makes a difference." I embarked on a set of structured interviews with CNOs across the country who had engaged in a professional practice model for nursing based on self-care.

Welcome New ACHE of MA Members

Thirty-seven new members joined in the 1st quarter of 2019.
