Highlights of Our Life and Work
July 22,  2018
So what does it mean to be an Affirming Ministry?  And isn't Peninsula United already welcoming and affirming?    Join us as we begin exploring these questions and wonder together about how we can faithfully respond to the inclusive love of God. We'll reflect on what Ephesians 2: 11-22  has to say in our context about God's welcome.   We'll also sing some inspired and inspiring hymns:   "Let us a build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live",  "Draw the Circle Wide...let this be our song, no one stands alone, standing side by side, draw the circle wide" and "Walls that divide are broken down; Christ is our unity."

Affirming Ministry
We are in the beginning stages exploring the possibility of Peninsula United becoming an Affirming congregation.  An Affirming congregation is first and foremost a justice-seeking community.  It is a community continually growing and learning, broadening their witness to God's Inclusive love.  An Affirming congregation is deeply concerned about justice and full inclusion for all God's people regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, age, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.  Through education and discernment we will honestly and faithfully ask ourselves, "Can I see myself in the "other" in society."  Affirming Ministries acknowledge that God's love is wider and more inclusive than they can imagine, let alone live out, and they commit themselves to sharing that news with others.  For more information about Affirming Ministry  contact any of our Affirming Ministry Team members and/or visit

Wednesday Walkers
Our walking group will continue to meet during the summer. We meet weekly at 9:30 am at Camp Alexandra to walk at Crescent Beach followed by coffee in the Dining Hall at Camp Alexandra.

VIDEO TECHNOLOGY is taking a vacation over the summer.
Until the end of August we will worship the old fashioned way-- with paper bulletins.

We are still looking for a few folks to help run the sound/microphone system over the summer.  Please speak to Teri Lydiard if you are able to assist with this task.

Many thanks to our AV team:   Barb Gregg, Teri Lydiard, Glenn Roy, Brian Zwick, and Jim Sheppard.  We hope you have a restful and fun summer!

Message from First United Church, Vancouver
Dear Congregation Partners,
The First United Listening Ministry team is honoured to support the lives of community members in our small way. There are many challenges we witness - homelessness, addiction, poverty, mental health issues - sometimes all of these and others too. But as we pay attention to what our community members tell us, we can also share joyfully in their gifts. In the past few weeks, for example, one of our members treated me to poems by W.B. Yeats and Nobel prize-winning Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz - all memorized and quietly shared. Another quotes passages from the Bible, an even more remarkable feat in a second language. One of our members has an incredible facility for word puzzles - she turns scared into sacred. Another is a colourist - she draws intricate patterns and fills them with all the colours of the rainbow.
Perhaps the greatest gift we encounter is the gift of courage. We see it in the quiet determination to make it through each day often, it seems, from a place of deep faith, despite the hardships endured. As one of the members said to me last week, quoting his favourite poet, "God gives people a reason not to give up." As a Listener, I am very grateful for this opportunity to experience and honour so many gifts within the First community.

Please consider donating the following items that are always in need:
