Welcome Class of 2022! The month of May begins First-Year Student Orientation, for our newly enrolled students and their families. FAU encourages parents and family members to participate in the Parent & Guest track of First-Year Student Orientation, so that you can learn valuable information on how to support your student throughout the next four years. Many of our current students are spending the summer studying abroad, interning in their career field, or remaining on campus for summer courses. We are excited to see what opportunities the summer brings for our new and returning students. If you have any questions throughout the year, we encourage family members to contact our office for support.

The FAU Career Center has partnered with Handshake, a modern career development platform, to replace our current OWL CareerLink job portal and be your student's one-stop-shop for launching their career. Handshake offers new features, enabling your student to:
- Access personalized job recommendations based on their major and interests
- Report their internship and experiences
- Register for Career Fairs
- Manage on-campus interviews with top companies
- Schedule appointments with their career counselors
The Career Center will preload their profile and they will be able to access their Handshake account beginning on Monday, May 14. For more information on how to assist your student with getting started visit the

Parent & Family Success Conference
|
|
The How2FAU Parent Success Conference is for incoming parents interested in learning how to be of support to their college student. As a student begins their collegiate journey, parents find that the change from parent to guide/mentor becomes challenging. This program aims to provide additional support to parents who are interested in learning how to best assist their college student.
We encourage families to attend the Parent & Guest track of New Student Orientation and utilize this conference as next steps after Orientation.

Save the Date for Parent and Family Weekend 2018!
October 5-7, 2018
Parent and Family Weekend is a signature fall program at Florida Atlantic University which allows parents, family members, and friends of students at FAU to come together and experience campus life. This weekend provides you the opportunity to visit your student and take part in the engaged events and programs that involve the campus community.
Registration will launch on May 22, 2018. Space is limited, register early!

The Summer 2018 Short-Term Advance Application will be available on MyFAU (click on Money Matters tab) on Monday, April 23. If all eligibility criteria are met, the Short-Term Advance will begin to disburse on Monday, May 7 (date is subject to change) for registered Summer Term 1 and Summer Term 2 students.

Is your student interested in having their research published in a nationally recognized journal? The Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Research Journal (FAURJ) is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that is published annually. FAURJ is now accepting manuscript submissions for the newest volume.
|

Applications are now open for the OURI Peer Mentor Program. The program is designed to help guide undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing research and inquiry, by providing student mentors. Peer Mentors are student representatives of all disciplines, colleges, and partner campuses, and are wonderful advocates for research and creative projects.

University Advising Services (UAS) helps your student develop and implement an academic plan for success at FAU. Our advising program is based on the Appreciative Advising model, which is the intentional practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experience and achieve their DREAMS, DESIGN a plan to achieve those dreams, and make necessary changes to ACHIEVE their goals. The advisee and advisor are partners, and below are a few tips on how you can be an APPRECIATIVE PARTNER with your FAU student.

- Deliver: Support your student's resiliency. Encourage your student to join a study group, sign up for tutoring, attend classes, and visit campus resources.
- Don't Settle: Celebrate your student's successes and continue to challenge them to raise the bar. You can tell them that they have done great so far

"It is seldom a good idea for first year students to work at a paid job, unless they absolutely need the money. Once acclimated to college, your student might want to secure and on- or off-campus part-time job- but this should never be at the expense of doing well in his/her classes. The advantage of on-campus employment is convenience. Hours ate flexible and work is nearby. Some students qualify for a work-student position based on their family's income level. Off-campus jobs may pay better, but transportation may be a hassle, and the hours are likely to be less flexible."
