March 28 Board Highlights
SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, March 28, 2019 regular meeting. 

The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
  • Update on Access Issues for All Students 
     
  • Approval of the Resolution of the Board of Trustees to Declare Crestmoor Site as Surplus Property and Commence Noticing Requirements
     
  • Review and Discuss the City of Burlingame/SMUHSD Aquatic Center Term Sheet 
     
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E. Poplar Avenue, San Mateo.

Awards and Achievements
Capuchino Senior Awarded Scholarship by Football Foundation
 
Brandon Mailangi, an outstanding senior football player from Capuchino High School in San Bruno, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the National Football Foundation of Northern California. He is one of 24 Northern California high school senior football players so honored this year. Those players were feted at a March 8 banquet at the SFO Marriott Hotel in Burlingame.

BHS Jazz Band Earns Unanimous Superior Rating

The Burlingame High School Jazz Band participated in the CMEA Jazz Festival on January 18, 2019 at Mills High School. 

They were the only ensemble at the festival in two days to earn a "Unanimous Superior" for their performance from the collegiate adjudicators. 

The jazz students performed three jazz pieces on stage, and then did a great job in the sight-reading portion of the festival. Congratulations to the BHS Jazz Band!

Two San Mateo Adult School Staff Members Honored 

Patricia Brfown and Stefanie Wright with their awards Congratulations to  Patricia Brown and Stefanie Wright of the San Mateo Adult School, both were recognized at the  California Council for Adult Education (CCAE) Bay Section Conference in early March. 

Adult School Teacher Patricia Brown was recognized at the conference with the 2019 Excellence in Teaching Award.  Patricia is the Adult School's ESL Coordinator and also is an ESL teacher.  

Adult School Administrative Assistant Stefanie Wright was recognized with the CCAE Bay Section 2019 Excellence in Support Services Award.

The California Council for Adult Education (CCAE) is the largest professional organization serving adult education in California. CCAE serves all levels of the adult education family including teachers, classified, students, and administrators.

Aragon's Barbara Hughes Receives 2019 California Art Educator Award
 
The National Art Education Association (NAEA) has named Aragon High School's Barbara Hughes as the recipient of its 2019 California Art Educator award. 
NAEA is the professional association for art educators. 

This award honors an outstanding member from each state or province association whose service and contribution to art education merits recognition and acclaim. 

In 2018, Barbara was recognized with the California Art Education Association's Outstanding Visual Art Educator of the Year Award .
County Office of Education Recognizes Two Aragon High School Students for STEM Projects

Aragon High School students Kaelyn Luebke and Shirleen Fang were recently recognized by the San Mateo County Office of Education for their exemplary projects at the 2019 San Mateo County STEM Fair. 

This year marks the 32nd year the County Office of Education has hosted the STEM Fair, which was developed to spark deeper interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education and STEM careers and to publicly recognize the achievements of students in San Mateo County. It was the first year that the fair expanded into "The Next Big Think," including art exhibitions, live performances, makerspaces, a hackathon, and examples of innovative learning projects from schools across San Mateo County. The event drew more than 2,200 San Mateo County educators, students, and families to celebrate student achievement across disciplines.
BHS Students Win Architecture Design Award

Students from Burlingame High School's Advanced Architectural Design class won a Merit Award for their entry into the Architecture at Zero competition held in January. 

The award winning entry was titled "Project Flow" and the student team that worked on it included: 

Zachary Nelson, 11th grade
Rick Maldonado, 11th grade
Alex Wilson, 11th grade
Sami Shibli, 12th grade

The students' teacher is Anna Liu.
 
This year's participants were tasked with designing a Zero Net Energy (ZNE) Student Recreation Center for a site on the California State University, Monterey Bay campus. 

ZNE building is a building with zero net energy consumption. The competition was prompted by California's goal for all new residential construction to be ZNE by 2020 and all new commercial construction to be ZNE by 2030.

Mills Robotics Team Earns Wild Card Spot to National Competition


Congratulations to the  Mills High School Robotics Team , the Boba Bots! They had two successful outings in March. They made it to the quarterfinals for the first time, finishing 21st out of 43 teams at the FIRST Robotics competition held in San Francisco, March 14-17.
 
The Boba Bots had another competition this past weekend at the Monterey Bay Regionals where they ranked 3rd out of 36 teams earning them a wild card spot in the National competition in Houston!
 
Congrats to the Boba Bots and their teacher Mary Rustia.
QKA Architects Receive Award for Modernization of San Mateo Performing Arts Center 

San Mateo Performing Arts Center The Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) modernization of the San Mateo Performing Arts Center (SMPAC)
recently won a 2019 Award of Honor from the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH) The award was presented at CASH's 40th Annual C onference on School Facilities in late February.

Completed in 2013, the 1,540-seat SMPAC, the largest theater between San Francisco and Cupertino, underwent an extensive demolition, reconstruction and renovation, resulting in a three-story modernized facility complete with new basement space, lobby, wrap-around mezzanine and balcony seating, orchestra pit and fly-loft. The enhanced facilities accommodate student and faculty use, as well as many community performances.

Hillsdale High School Seeks Career Day Presenters

On Wednesday, April 17, Hillsdale High School 9th and 10th grade classes will have the opportunity to hear presentations about a variety of career options. Hillsdale is seeking community members to provide 15-20 minute presentations about their career and answer questions from the students. Each presenter will be asked to make their presentation twice to two different groups of students. Session 1 runs 8:00 - 8:40 a.m. and session 2 runs 8:45 -9:25 a.m.

San Mateo High School Student Art on Display at SFO Museum

Check out the San Mateo High School Student Art Show on display until May 9, 2019 at the SFO Museum of Art:

"Spanning 115 years, the San Mateo High School student body is a microcosm with a long history of cultural and economic diversity. The school's motto is "Peace, Passion, and Pride." Students of the art program are exposed to a broad arts curriculum, which includes a variety of traditional studio courses in addition to others that explore new digital media. They are given opportunities to approach class projects in an individual and creative way while maintaining focus on the development of skill and technique. The student work on display in this exhibition reflects the diversity of people, experience, and artwork at San Mateo High School."

Capuchino High School Focuses on Mindfulness 

A recent study shows how mindfulness education in the classroom can reduce students' sense of stress and lengthen attention spans. Read more about the study in the KQED Mindshift article, How Making Time for Mindfulness Helps Students.

Did you know....

Capuchino High School has been piloting its Mindfulness Space since the start of the school year. The purpose of this space is for students to be able to take a 10-15 minute break to ground themselves with mindfulness techniques, so they can return to class in a better mental space for learning. Participation in the Mindfulness Space can be initiated by either student request or teacher referral.
Mills High School Student Film Festival is April 18



Save the date! Mills High School is 
hosting a Student Film Festival on Thursday, April 18 at 
7 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. Categories include narrative, documentary, education and experimental!
Vaping, What YOU Need to Know
Save the Date: Parent/Guardian Education Event is Thursday April 11

Join representatives from the Youth Leadership Institute for an educational, evidence-based presentation on Vaping with a focus on young people. 

The presentation will cover:
* What is vaping?
* What do the products look like?
* What are the health impacts of this trend?
* Information about marijuana and vaping!
* What parents can do

The presentation is on Thursday, April 11 and will take place at Burlingame High School.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for guests to access community agencies and resources. The p resentation is from 6 - 7 p.m. and will be followed by a p anel discussion and Q&A. 

 

Spanish and Chinese interpretation and free childcare will be available.

Free Teen Heart Screening Event for SMUHSD Students is April 14
Register now! 

This FREE teen heart screening event run by volunteers, sponsored in part by the district, is open to ALL students in the San Mateo Union High School District. It will be held at San Mateo High School and will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2019.

Each student who chooses to participate will receive a FREE 60-90 minute heart screening, which includes a health history questionnaire review, EKG test, and an echocardiogram. Undiagnosed heart defects in youth can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death. These tests would normally cost between $1,000 - $3,000.

Capuchino High School Spring Dance Concert is April 19-20

Capuchino High School presents its Spring Dance Concert April 19-20, both shows start at 7 p.m.

The Spring Dance show will be held at the CHS Theatre at 1501 Magnolia Street in San Bruno. 

Adults $12, Students/Children $7

More than 50 dance students participate in the concert. There will also be performances by the Polynesian Club and Latinos Unidos.

Community Conversations: Housing in San Mateo
Saturday, April 27

How is the issue of housing affecting you and those you care about? Join the City of San Mateo for a different type of dialogue about housing in our community on Saturday, April 27 and May 18, 2019.  

"Community Conversations: Housing in San Mateo" is a joint effort between the City and  Home for All, a San Mateo County collaborative aimed at helping our community talk more constructively about the shared challenge of housing. 

The goal is to create an inclusive environment for dialogue where all people are welcome to share their perspectives. This effort starts with you!

Community College Promise Scholars Program
 
If your senior is attending community college this fall, please make sure they apply for the Promise Scholars Program! The Promise Scholars Program "Degree for Free" includes TWO full years of financial support. In addition to financial support, the program provides dedicated counseling, career guidance, and an accelerated academic pathways to ensure students achieve their educational goals quickly. 

Students just need to log into their WebSMART account to apply. Five minutes can save you thousands of dollars! (Families need to have completed the FAFSA first, and it's not too late to apply). 

Students can contact their school counselors or visit the websites of  College of San Mateo , Skyline College or CaƱada College .
3rd Annual Event to Raise Awareness of the Importance of Mental Health is May 11

Stride for Awareness (SFA) and the San Mateo Police Activities League (SMPAL) are pleased to announce their 3rd Annual 5k Run/Walk and Resource Fair on Saturday, May 11 at Coyote Point. 

With the goal of creating  a safe society while promoting the physical, social and mental well-being of our youth, SMPAL and SFA brings you this 5k Run/Walk to promote the importance of Student Health and Mental Wellness; Healthy Mind, Body and Community.
