Meet Chris Sill: Former CASA Volunteer Who Brings Passion to BYP

Chris Sill has been engaged with Greater Richmond SCAN in a variety of roles since he first became involved. A few years ago, he was searching for a way to give back to the community. He felt that he had been fortunate to have a blessed life and wanted to pay it forward and be part of something that really made a difference in people's lives. A chance glance at a bulletin board in a coffee shop opened his eyes to the Richmond CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program.

He was inspired by the resilience of the children he worked with over his two years as a CASA volunteer. Despite what they had been through, the children he worked with were still funny, happy children. He saw children that had experienced countless roadblocks, moved to multiple homes, and had been separated from incarcerated parents begin to heal from their trauma and see the hope and resilience of the possibilities that were open to them. Chris explained that he saw firsthand the impact that having structure and a consistent, loving caregiver had on a child. The help of a caregiver and a CASA volunteer provided these children hope and a chance to combat the longstanding trauma of their childhood.

After serving as a CASA volunteer for a few years, Chris was introduced to the SCAN Board of Young Professionals. He saw this as a unique opportunity to get involved in the organization on a different level and connect with like-minded young professionals. Chris recently served as the chair of the BYPs Blue & White Ball, which raised a record-breaking $37,000 to support SCAN's programs in 2018.

We are so thankful to Chris for sharing his passion for helping, talents for making things happen, and leadership with SCAN!

 SCAN Volunteer of the Year
Anne Miller

SCAN was honored to present the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award to Anne Miller on April 10 at the Byrd Theatre.

Richmond CASA staff shared some words about Anne's incredible work and dedication:

Anne Miller has been a Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer for 20 years. She is an asset to not only CASA, but most importantly, her CASA kids. Anne has a warm, loving, cheerful demeanor that can put anyone at ease, especially children who have been through traumatic situations. One of Anne's many strengths is dependability which might seem simple, but to our kids who have been let down by people for most of their lives, it means the world to them. She has built resilience in her CASA kids by being a consistent, positive presence in their lives. Anne also advocates for services to be put into place for her kids and their parents to help with healing, growth, and rehabilitation. We are so grateful for Anne's continued hard work and dedication to Richmond City's most vulnerable kids.
