CFMS BUILDING NEWSLETTER
April 28, 2018

Dear CFMS Families,

This week in our building we had lots of different events take place! I was fortunate to be a part of some these celebrations and continue to be blown away by the maturity, unselfishness and intelligence shown by our students.

This week I witnessed our 7-12 choirs and strings perform. If you were in attendance, I'm sure you'll agree when I say they were amazing!

We also completed state testing in the areas of English Language Arts and Math. Students showed persistence, grit and worked very hard to do their absolute best. Our entire staff is proud of their efforts. We'll wrap up testing on Monday and Tuesday of next week when eighth graders complete the science portion of the assessment. If you have an eighth grader, please do not plan appointments on Monday or Tuesday between the hours of eight and ten in the morning.

After a long week of focusing on testing and still working hard in their regular classes, students in seventh grade enjoyed a trip to Fun n' Stuff for a day of team building and connecting. Meanwhile, back at school, our eighth graders participated in the Kick-it For Cancer kickball game. The gym was rocking with positive energy.

In the academic arena we've posted all students who scored a 4.0 in quarter three and a 3.0 throughout quarters one, two and three. The list is quite impressive! Check it out! Also below, you will find our Students of the Month for April. Read below, all the wonderful comments given to each student by their teachers.

Finally, please take the time to look through the many links attached below. I understand newsletters can be long but it also shows the dedication and opportunities that our staff and community make available to our students. It truly takes a village and we thank you for always being a partner with us in helping your child to grow!

As always, if you need anything, just let me know!

Proud to be a Tiger!

A Message from School Counselor, Mr. Patterson:
 Principals, teachers, and the public are increasingly recognizing the importance of teaching social and emotional skills to students alongside academic skills. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is gaining increasing attention as one way of promoting the personal skills important for healthy functioning through school - and beyond.

According to the Collaborative for Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning (CASEL, 2014) in the United States, SEL involves teaching five competencies to students:
  • Self-awareness (recognising one’s emotions);
  • Self-management (effectively managing one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviours);
  • Social awareness (taking the perspective of others);
  • Relationship skills (developing and maintaining high quality relationships); and
  • Responsible decision making (making constructive choices in behavioural and social interactions).

Importantly, SEL can be taught in various ways, such as embedding it in the curriculum, running a standalone program, or implementing it as a school-wide effort. In all cases, teachers play a central role in running SEL.

Safer Ohio Tip Line
The single greatest deterrent of an act of violence is identification and intervention with at risk students. All students, parents and staff must feel comfortable expressing concern and alerting the appropriate individual(s) when concerns arise. The state of Ohio has an anonymous tip line that can be reached via text or call with any issue of concern, 1-844-SaferOH  (844-723-3764 ). This line is monitored by analysts at the Ohio Homeland Security Threat Assessment and Prevention Unity at all times.
