Reading Patio at the Central Library in 1919. Edson Smith Collection

Dear ,

The Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation is thrilled to announce that photos from the Library's Edson Smith collection (including the Reading Patio, above) will be included in an upcoming exhibit at the Ferragamo Museum in Florence, Italy!  The exhibit highlights "shoemaker to the stars" Salvatore Ferragamo's formative years in Santa Barbara, during which he

became known for his work with Flying A Studios, one of the first major film production companies, before moving to Hollywood. As a matter of fact, Ferragamo's first workshop was located at 1033 State Street!

If you're  planning to visit Florence in the near future, or would like to learn more about the museum, read about Palazzo Spini Feroni, built in 1298 and the home of the Ferragamo business since 1938. The palazzo was also, in the late1800's, the capital of Italy!

The Edson Smith Collection contains more than 2,000 photographs of historic Santa Barbara, taken between 1870 and 1940 and held in storage at the Central Library. Many thanks to John C. Woodward for his continuing support of this photo digitization project through the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation. Please contact the foundation's Director, Ellen Pasternack, at directorsbplf@gmail.com,

Teens Start to Plan a Room of Their Own!
The Teen Advisory Board, open to teens between the ages of 13 to 18, is now meeting at the Central Library. Created to develop programming for teens and, soon, the new Teen Center,

group members are meeting about twice a month, getting to know one another and brainstorming ideas. This  group will work with an architect, designers and library staff to plan, design and program the New Teen Center, a self-contained space for teens, and serve as library advocates.

Involve your teens in the library! Contact  Molly Wetta, Senior Librarian, Youth Services at mwetta@santabarbaraca.gov or 805.962.7653 to learn more.

To find out how you can support the Teen Center, one of our Next Steps projects, please contact Ellen Pasternack, Foundation Director, at directorsbplf@gmail.com or 805.689.2448.
