Celebrating 40 years of Fayette Senior Services

In 1965 the Beatles released "Help!" with song lyrics reminding us at times we need assistance, particularly as self-assuredness and independence diminish or as we age. Nationally, 74 million+ people are ages 51-69 and in 2017 more than 50% was over 50. While some refer to this trend as the "Silver Tsumani," within the Atlanta metro region Fayette County hosts the largest aging population and the smallest demographic of millennials.

In the 1990's when the first generation of baby boomers turned 50 many communities sought to attract retirees and pre-retirees to relocate, offering qualities including, safety, quality health care, airport proximity and housing opportunities. Sounds very similar to Fayette County! Incidentally, these qualities are similar to those millennials seek today.

Started in 1978, Fayette Senior Services (FSS) is a public/private partnership that provides meals, programming, recreational, life-long learning and championing for our senior population.    A few interesting facts:
A ging: Fayette County's median age is 43.5; 39% of our citizens are 50+. FSS serves about 2,205 members.
C ompassion: FSS offers a variety of social services including in-home care, adult day care, home repair services and more.
T ransportation: FSS provides transportation for adults 60+ and last year provided 19,119 rides to medical or personal appointments in Fayette County. Almost 2,000 of these included wheelchair transports.
I ndependence: FSS serves as the county's Meals on Wheels provider, delivering more than 53,800 meals between January and June 2018. They can also include "ani-meals" for pets!
Vibrant:  FSS offers a variety of classes including,  Tai Chi, line dancing, pilates, yoga, walking groups, bridge, pool, etc.  and a fitness center promoting healthy eating and physical activity.
E nriching: FSS provides members with travel and learning opportunities. Members can dine together and socialize at the Ultimate CafĂ© which serves close to 27,000 meals.
FSS enables our over-50 population to remain ACTIVE , creating their stories and celebrating life.
