From the Rector
Fifty years ago yesterday, the Fair Housing Act became federal law. Enacted in the days just after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, this law was an effort to continue the work Dr. King had begun, toward a vision of equity that would transcend divisions of race and economic status.
The night before last, the Wilmette Village Board approved the construction of Cleland Place, a building with 16 affordable 1- and 2-bedroom apartments. Since the time this proposal first came before the Plan Commission in November of 2015, members of St. Augustine's have stood in support. You were there at the first Plan Commission meeting, you joined subsequent community conversations as we shared our hopes and worked together to find a good solution as neighbors, you were there again about a month ago when the Plan Commission voted its support, and you were there last night when the Board approved the proposal.
Our gospel calls us to hospitality. In Matthew 25:38, Jesus' disciples ask: "When was it when we saw you a stranger and welcomed you?" From joining this housing initiative, to hosting guests who are temporarily unhoused through Family Promise, to supporting a Syrian refugee family now living in this area, to funding and participating in advocacy organizations like Open Communities and Legal Assistance Foundation, you put your faith into action in ways that continue the good work begun so many years ago -- work that Jesus invites us to do, saying "just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." (Matt. 25:40)
Thank you for all that you do, in the church and in the world. Thanks for helping to make this a community that welcomes everybody.

Canterbury Consciousness: Forming an Episcopal Identity Next Tuesday, April 17, 7:00pm
St. A's new inquirers, and Baptism and Confirmation preparation series, Canterbury Consciousness, continues this coming Tuesday evening, April 17 at 7pm in Puhlman Hall, where our topic will be the Eucharist. For the class, Andrew+ will lead us in a conversation about the Eucharist, or Communion, and the theology around some of the prayers we hear week after week. For the lab, Megan Murphy-Gill will discuss a theology of bread, and together, we will make gluten-free communion bread. We will end the evening with a Communion Service using some of the homemade bread. I am really looking forward to this class, and so I hope you will come with your questions and curiosities! Questions before? Please contact
Andrew+

Cleland Place, Wilmette, is a GO!
Thanks to all those who raised their hands, wrote to commissioners and trustees, spoke up at meetings and wore YIMBY Wilmette stickers! The first affordable housing for low-income individuals, small families, veterans and those with disabilities in Wilmette won unanimous approval from Village Trustees Tuesday evening. This is a truly wonderful sign (dare we claim a God-sighting?) that Wilmette's elected and appointed citizens, as well as staff, agree that EVERYBODY is welcome in this community. An Easter Alleluia!
