Physicians Represent Mississippi on National Stage at ACLF/NCCL
Six MAFP physician members, in addition to Beth Embry, Executive Director, attended two AAFP conferences held in Kansas City this week to learn and improve their leadership skills.

MAFP President Dr. Katie Patterson and Vice President Dr. David Wheat attended the Annual Chapter Leader Forum (ACLF), which is the AAFP's leadership development program for chapter-elected leaders, aspiring chapter leaders, and chapter staff. Among other roles, ACLF functions as an orientation for emerging leaders who serve on chapter boards, as well as professional development for new and seasoned chapter staff.

Drs. Jonathan Buchanan of Carthage, Ned Miller of West Point, Tobe Momah of Jackson, and Chrystal Sumrall of Laurel attended the National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL), held concurrently with ACLF. They have participated in caucuses and hearings, took part in educational breakout sessions, and networked with other family physicians from around the country.

Dr. Smith Honored With
MAFP Humanitarian Award
Dr. Smith
Dr. Robert Smith, MD, FAAFP, of Jackson, was awarded the MAFP Humanitarian Award for courageous leadership on April 21.

Dr. Smith was nominated by the MAFP Awards Committee and the presentation was made at the MAFP Spring Conference.

Dr. Smith, a MAFP member since 1959, was an instrumental figure during the civil rights movement in Mississippi, providing consistent health care to those with little or no access. A founder of the Medical Committee for Civil Rights and the Committee for Human Rights in the mid-1960's, Dr. Smith and other health care professionals aided and treated civil rights workers and many other Mississippians during the Freedom Summer of 1964.

Dr. Smith also co-authored, founded and implemented the concept of Federally Qualified Health Centers. He co-founded the nation's first rural community health center, Delta Health Center in Mound Bayou, as well as the Mississippi Primary Health Care Association (MPHCA), which provides accessible and affordable primary medical care and dental care services to individuals and families.

Dr. Smith was honored in November 2017 with the American Medical Association's Medal of Valor Award at its 2017 Interim Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Medal of Valor Award honors AMA members who demonstrate courage under extraordinary circumstances in non-wartime situations. A native of Terry and a graduate of Tougaloo College, Dr. Smith received his medical degree from Howard Medical School and serves as president and chief executive officer of Central Mississippi Health Services, Inc.
Dr. Hill Honored with  Name
on  MAFP Conference Room
Dr. Hill
The conference room at the MAFP Headquarters has been named the "J. Edward Hill, MD, FAAFP Conference Room" after our past president and past Family Physician of the Year who recently retired after representing our state on the national and world stage. The MAFP Board of Directors voted to brand the conference room with his name.

Dr. Hill, of Oxford, has been a MAFP member since 1970 and is a board-certified family physician. He has contributed to the knowledge base, credibility, and community of family medicine in Mississippi. After completing Ole Miss and earning his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, he served in the U.S. Navy and then practiced medicine for 27 years in Hollandale.

After years in the Delta, Dr. Hill answered the call to teach new physicians, accepting the position of founding director of the North Mississippi Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program in Tupelo. Dr. Hill held that position from 1995-2001 and again from 2008-2013, and remained on the faculty from 2013-2017 before retiring this past December. Most notably, he served as president of the American Medical Association in 2005-2006 and as chair of the World Medical Association.
