Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act
The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is working on new legislation to waive the waiting period for Medicare eligibility and Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for individuals with Metastatic Breast Cancer. Please see their action alert below for more details.

Also don't miss two other items of interest included below the NBCC Alert.

One of  NBCC's highest legislative priorities this year is to enact legislation to waive the 24 month waiting period for Medicare eligibility and the 5 month waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for individuals with Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Representatives Peter King (R-NY) and Kathy Castor (D-FL) have agreed to introduce the  Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act.  Passage of this legislation would accomplish  NBCC 's goal to waive all waiting periods.

Representatives King and Castor would like to introduce this legislation with as many original cosponsors as possible.   Please contact your Representatives in the House and ask them to join their colleagues by becoming an original cosponsor of this legislation to provide much needed relief for eligible individuals with metastatic breast cancer.   This is the list  of Representatives   who have signed as original cosponsors to the  "Dear Colleague" letter;  if your Representative(s)  are not  on this list, please contact their office to urge them to sign on.

Please have your Representatives contact Deena Tauster in Representative King's office at [email protected] or (202) 225-7896  to become an original cosponsor.  Also, please let  NBCC  know if your Representative has agreed to sign on so we can keep a running record as well.  As always, thank you for your important advocacy on behalf of the National Breast Cancer Coalition!

Threat to Patient Protections in Health Care Law
Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it will not defend several critical patient protections in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and instead is arguing to end them. The DOJ is siding with a lawsuit brought by 20 states that argues the ACA's individual mandate has become unconstitutional.  And more importantly, also says the law's provisions to guarantee coverage for people with pre-exisiting conditions should be ended.

If successful, the case could leave millions of Americans with major illnesses, such as cancer, unable to obtain health care coverage. A coalition of 16 state attorneys general will defend the Affordable Care Act in this case, including Virginia's Attorney General Mark Herring.  VBCF will be following the case closely.
