The Oakland Mills community is excited to welcome OMHS's new principal for the 2018-19 school year, Jefferey Fink. We also say goodbye to acting principal, Ms. Reid, assistant principals Ms. Swarz and Ms. Young, who are being transferred and welcome new assistant principals Brein Bashore and Steven Fleming. There will be an Ice Cream Social greet and goodbye meeting on June 13th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Oakland Mills Middle School (OMMS)

Congratulations to the OMMS Seussical cast and crew on a great run!

OMMS Summer Library
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in July (except for July 4th)
8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Open to any Oakland Mills student of any age. The library will hold a story time for children ages 5-8 at 10:00 a.m. Activities at the library include a reflection wall, markerspace, coding stations, gaming group, and peace circle. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Several OMMS students will be working on a scholarly journal this summer. They will refine their informational text and writing skills. The journal will be published for the school and can be shared with the community. For additional details please contact Regina Coleman at OMMS.

Stevens Forest Elementary School (SFES)
 
Congratulations to the SFES 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade choirs and the Choir Chimes on a great concert!
 
We are sad to see Principal Ernesto Diaz transfer to a different school but are excited to welcome a new principal, Dr. Joy Smith for the 2018-19 school year.

Talbott Springs Elementary School (TSES)
 
TSES Rebuild News
The Howard County Board of Education voted during its May 17, 2018 meeting to move forward with re-evaluating and redesigning a replacement of the Talbott Springs Elementary School (TSES). ( Read more) State funding is still needed, however. Contact local and state officials to let them know that you support a rebuild of Talbott Springs Elementary School!

Howard County Public School System 

Changes were made to the end of the school year to accommodate for inclement weather days:
  • Now through Thursday, June 14: Full days of school for all students.
  • High school exams:
    June 11: 1 exam
    June 12-14: 2 exams
  • Friday, June 15-Tuesday, June 19: All schools dismiss three-hours early. No half-day Pre-K/RECC.
  • Tuesday, June 19: Last day of school for students.
No new graded work will be assigned at any level June 15-19.

Join your neighbors in a fun parade to celebrate the 4th of July! Meet up at the Oakland Mills Village Center at 9:45 am. Bring your stroller, your wagon or just yourself and walk along the sidewalks and paths. Most importantly, decorate whatever you are bringing to celebrate all who make up the village of Oakland Mills.

Oakland Mills Education Committee
No meeting in June.
 
The Oakland Mills Community Association's Education Committee will host a BOE Candidates' Forum in September or October.  A date will be forthcoming.
 
Committee meets the 4th Tuesday of each month from
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at The Other Barn.  Everyone is welcome. There will be no meeting in June. Stay tuned for the next meeting date.

HC DrugFree
HC Drug Free is looking for parent/adult volunteers. Please email Admin@hcdrugree.org to volunteer. Include your availability and specify whether you can type, are willing to drive to pharmacies or liquor stores, and/or have any special skills or interests. 

Blessings in a Backpack
Please support Talbott Springs in this Community Outreach program. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to purchase food. To support Blessings in a Backpack, visit  blessingsinabackpack.org and select Talbott Springs. All donations are tax deductible. We thank you for your support for our students in need.  

A-OK Mentoring 
Make a difference! Help enhance the academic and social development of identified Howard County elementary school students in schools near you through a consistent, supportive relationship with a child.  Volunteers must be available weekday, daytime hours to meet one-on-one with an assigned student during the school day or with students in small groups in afterschool programs.
