HOW ARIEL INVESTMENTS USES ITS DIVERSITY AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
According to  Mellody Hobson President, Ariel Investments,  the diversity at Ariel Investments - and lack thereof throughout the rest of the industry - is a competitive advantage for the firm. The  Chicago Tribune reported recently that 51% of Ari el Investments' staff are women, while 27% are African-American, 13% are Asian and more than 7% are Hispanic. Two-thirds of the leadership team is female, as well.

"At Ariel we actually joke that if we are like-minded in our point of view about a stock, it's going to be a problem," Mellody Hobson said. "If everyone agrees, there's something wrong. We really want to challenge each other, challenge our assumptions, and make sure we're looking at every conceivable angle, every conceivable idea."  Read more...

LISA MADIGAN ATTORNEY GENERAL MADIGAN RECEIVES HIGHEST HONOR FROM FELLOW ATTORNEYS GENERAL
Attorney General Lisa Madigan received the prestigious Kelley-Wyman award Thursday from attorneys general across the country. The Kelley-Wyman Award is presented by the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) to an attorney general who has done the most to achieve NAAG's objectives, which include leading litigation on behalf of the state, reforming the law when needed and taking a lead role in legal and public advocacy initiatives on a host of issues to benefit the state.   Read more...
UNITED SCRAP METAL NAMED 2018 COMED SUPPLIER DIVERSITY OVERALL PERFORMER, CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL SERVICES
Marsha Serlin and her team at United Scrap Metal were named the 2018 ComEd Supplier Diversity Overall Performer, Construction and Material Services. TERRA FOUNDATION INVESTS NEARLY $1.5 MILLION ON INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC AWARDS & FELLOWSHIPS 
The Terra Foundation for American Art (Elizabeth Glassman) announced a total investment of $1.4 million on its 2018 international academic awards and fellowships, including inaugural research programs in Italy and Germany.
CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDEN'S SUMMER DINNER DANCE: FUNDRAISING FOR A LIVING MUSEUM
The Chicago Botanic Garden's (Jean Franczyk) 15th annual Summer Dinner Dance raised nearly  $1 million to support the garden's many initiatives, from sustaining horticultural excellence to ensuring access to fresh produce in Chicago's neighborhoods through urban education programs.  The black-tie party at the garden's North Shore location attracted more than 400 guests for an evening under the stars with dinner and dancing.

"The garden has both great beauty and great power. This place is good for body, mind and soul," said Jean Franczyk, Chicago Botanic Garden president and CEO. Read more...
UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO CRIME LAB TEAMS UP WITH CHICAGO SPORTS ALLIANCE
University of Chicago Crime Lab ( Roseanna Ander) helped owners, executives, and chairmen from Chicago sports teams to form the Chicago Sports Alliance, which was unveiled this past December. The teams announced a total of $1 million in one-time grants for Choose to Change, the Crime Lab and for training for embedded civilian analysts who work with the police department to develop strategies to reduce crime in the city's most violent areas.

"It's not just the dollars, but I think it's kind of who they are, their ability to have influence with such a huge range of the population. But I do think for me the most important thing was sending a message that this isn't just somebody else's problem to fix," said Roseanna Ander, Executive Director, University of Chicago Crime Lab. NOMINATIONS FOR CHICAGO INNOVATION AWARDS
For the 17th annual year, the Chicago Innovation Awards will be celebrating the most innovative new products and services in the Chicago region. Nominees can cut across industries, from large corporations to start-ups, for-profit and non-profit, public and private sector, high tech and low tech. The key is innovation.

If you have developed a new product or service in the last 3 years, you are encouraged to self-nominate for this year's awards. Nominations are free and can be submitted via an online form which can be found here. The deadline is Tuesday, July 31.

This year's winners will be celebrated to 1500 people at the Chicago Innovation Awards on October 29th at the Harris Theater, invited to ring the Nasdaq Bell, covered in local media, invited to meet with the Mayor, Governor, Cook County President and more.
