Design & Education
Insulectro's goals are to assist you in your design efforts - through design and education.
We have recognized that there is a need to keep the industry up to date on the latest and greatest materials especially as the technology is becoming ever more difficult.
Insulectro has spent a lot of time working through our ACT program which works with the fabricators and OEMs to find the best fit material for their needs.
Throughout this process we have become increasingly more aware of how critical the design is to ensure the performance of the final assembled circuit board. The best materials can not overcome a poor design.
Knowing this, Insulectro will be partnering with Design Houses with the goal of making Revision 1 work.
Our design partners will aid in everything from design checks to full schematic to routing, layout, and stackup.
In addition to working alongside these Design Houses we are taking an initiative on education throughout the industry. Some items that are first to bat is product materials, where materials fit within certain designs, and overall DFX.

EMD Performance Materials Provides
Paste Don't Plate
Design Solution for Thick Panels
Q: What is Ormet®?
A:
Ormet® is a way to create Z interconnects with copper paste instead of plating.
Q: Why would I choose Ormet® over conventional processing?
A:
There are 4 main reasons why people choose Ormet®. See the examples below.
|
Thick Panels:
- Thick panels offer manufacturing and design challenges. Thick panels tend to have many layers which require many vias for electrical connection, which compromises surface real estate.
- With Ormet you build smaller subs and bond them together with a low flow pre-preg and let the Ormet make that electrical connection between the subs.
- Thick panels can also be difficult to drill and may require flip drilling which can be problematic and challenging.
- Finally, thick panels tend to have high aspect ratio holes which are hard to metalize.
|
Eliminate Back Drill:
- Back drill is not ideal for electrical performance, so eliminating the nub and dead space all together provide a cleaner signal.
- The back drill process in manufacturing can be challenging and lead to scrap on a panel that is 99% complete.
|
Reduce Process Steps:
For jobs that require several lamination steps, the Ormet process allows a board to built in 1 lamination step.
|
Increase Surface Real Estate:
- As mentioned before the reduced need for vias will increase surface real estate.
- Cap cores can have Ormet vias connected from layer 2 to layer 1 and from layer n-1 to layer n with Ormet. The surface won’t have any surface drills that can hinder electrical performance or take up real estate.
|
Ormet's single lamination process eliminates sequential yield loss and reduces time in factory by more than 50%.

DuPont™ Interra™ HK04J & HK04M Deliver Superior Handling Capability & Design Flexibility
Power Distribution Networks (PDNs) for network and telecom applications are facing the increasing challenges of denser IC designs, smaller packaging sizes and higher device speeds. To reduce the noise in the system, decoupling capacitors have historically been placed on the surface of the board – but designers are running out of room for any more capacitors.
One solution is embedded capacitance: designers can place a thin copper clad laminate between the power and ground planes to lower the inductance and reduce the impedance and noise in the system.
By reducing
the in-plane inductance between power and ground layers, designers can remove surface mount capacitors to free up space on the board, simplify circuit routing, improve reliability and reduce costs.
The best choice for embedded capacitance laminates is the Interra™ HK04 product family.
|
|
Interra™ HK04J and HK04M boast best-in-class mechanical properties and deliver superior handling capability, even as the dielectric thickness is reduced to 12 µm. This allows designers to reap the benefits of the thinnest embedded capacitance material without sacrificing yields during processing. Interra™ HK04J and HK04M also offer designers more design flexibility with their excellent capacitance stability over a range of frequencies, voltages and temperatures.
Interra™ HK04J is available with 25 µm dielectric thickness and Interra HK04M is available with 12 and 25 µm dielectric thicknesses.
You’re going to love DuPont™ Interra™ laminates, call me quick!

Insulectro's Londonderry NH Branch Adds Slitting Capability
Insulectro has recently purchased a new
Catbridge 900-0 Duplex Slitter
and unwind system. The model 900-O is a high speed, modular, duplex center slitter rewinder with cantilevered rewind shafts and overhead web path. The unit has a web speed from 50-2,500 FPM and a web width of 24” to 62” with maximum rewind diameter of 31.5”. The unit is capable of rewind slit widths of 2” to 42” roll sizes.
This unit will be installed in our Londonderry, NH branch in our new custom sheeting and converting center, where we are completing our new clean room facility. We invested in this piece of equipment to support our advanced substrate business.
This equipment will provide Insulectro with in-house capabilities to convert larger rolls to smaller rolls. It will allow us to provide our customer and supplier base with material same day and/or next day deliveries while maintaining quality standards.
Designers understand it's all about speed to the market!
I gotta tell you, this is big!
