Rita discusses ways to manage stress through resilience, the characteristics of resilient people, as well as personal resiliency skills and attitudes, and how to strengthen them.

About Our Guest Speaker:
Ask Rita Schiano what she does, and she'll answer, "It depends on the day of the week."

On Monday through Friday, you may find her presenting resilience-based programs on managing stress or leadership development.

Or you may find her giving a keynote or workshop on Changing Your Habitudes, Managing Stress, Resilience, or The Healing Power of Forgiveness.

NSA Member Or she might be presenting a book discussion on one of her novels.

Southbridge Credit Union and Bravehearts Team Up for Center of Hope
Southbridge Credit Union to Make Donation for Each Bravehearts Home Run Hit in 2018!

Fans at Worcester Bravehearts games have another reason to root for home runs in 2018: the news that a local credit union will be stepping up with a donation to another local non-profit for each long ball the Bravehearts hit this summer.

Southbridge Credit Union (SCU), a not-for-profit community credit union with four branch locations and a lending center, has partnered with the Worcester Bravehearts to support the Center of Hope Foundation, also of Southbridge. For each home run hit by the Bravehearts in their 56-game regular season and potential playoff matchups, SCU will donate $100 to the Center of Hope Foundation.

Since 1956, the Center of Hope has provided people with disabilities and their families the resources, services, and opportunities to be contributing members of their communities, and to achieve the most fulfilling and meaningful lives possible. The Center has done this through day habilitation programs, family and youth support services, and its 14 agency businesses in the Sturbridge & Southbridge area. These businesses train and employ hundreds of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities in service and retail industries. For example, customers can plan a home construction project through "Fair & Square Construction," get their vehicle cleaned through "Just the Details," or simply pick up a box of fudge at "Hope Sweet Hope," the agency's sweetest business on Main Street in Sturbridge.

Erika Travinski, Assistant COO of CoHF states "The Center of Hope Foundation is very grateful for the support that Southbridge Credit Union has shown us all through our 62 years, as well as through this endeavor. Bravehearts General Manager, Dave Peterson, has been a friend and volunteer for our agency for many years and his continued support along with the whole Braveheart's team is spectacular. We could not do the work we do with people with disabilities without the generosity of organizations like SCU and the Bravehearts."

Historically, the Bravehearts have hit between 26 and 37 total home runs in their 56-game Futures League season. Last year the team smacked 36 home runs on the way to the championship series. Southbridge Credit Union will donate $100 for each Bravehearts' home run hit either at home or on the road. A check presentation on-field is planned at the end of the season so that both Southbridge Credit Union and the Center of Hope Foundation can be honored.

"This is a partnership with some special meaning behind it," said Bravehearts General Manager Dave Peterson. "It reiterates the philosophy we've had since our inception that 1+1 = 3. Here you have two local small businesses working together for each other and for the benefit of a third organization; one that does so much to provide individuals with disabilities the training and work opportunities that help them fulfill their lives."

SCU - known for community citizenship that also includes support of the United Way of Southbridge, Sturbridge and Charlton, Tri-Community YMCA, and even a functional branch at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School- this creates an exciting summer partnership that could also become a focal point as we celebrate our 80th year in business.

" Southbridge Credit Union has proudly been servicing this community for 80 years. We are thrilled to partner with the Bravehearts on this endeavor that supports the Center of Hope Foundation. We look forward to seeing you at the ballpark and let's hope for many home runs!" states President and CEO of SCU, Kate Alexander.

Are Habits That Don't Serve You Holding You Back?
Then it's time to Change Your Habitudes . . .
Tuesday, June 19, 2018, 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Sturbridge, MA

Negative thinking patterns can limit the quality of life you desire.
Learn how to transcend those limitations to achieve your goals and get
to that next level in your life.

At an early age we developed emotional habits and patterns - Habitudes- that influence how we perceive and move through our lives. Some Habitudes serve us, others do not. Regardless, these Habitudes determine the outcomes in our lives.

"Rita is a gifted speaker with a heart for helping others in their growth process. Her focus on personal fulfillment as a worthwhile goal is refreshing." Laurie Nelson, Attendee, Habitudes 2.0 Workshop, April 2018

So how do we change these Habitudes that do not serve us? How do we make the shift towards positive thoughts and actions? By exploring, breaking down, and understanding the Habitude process.

Change Your Habitudes 2.0 will:
  • Examine habit formation and its effect on behavior
  • Help you uncover the Negative Habitudes holding you back
  • Examine key decisions that direct your actions
  • Explore core beliefs and the choices that may not be serving you
  • Offer strategies for releasing those negative thought patterns
"Opened my eyes for my future projects. Very interesting and informative." Joan Campanale, Attendee, Habitudes 2.0 Workshop, April 2018

You will also learn how to break the negative Habitude cycle through reframing using the process of Strategic Goal Mapping - a creative and graphic goal-mapping technique.

Strategic Goal Mapping (SGM) is a system I developed that incorporates the highly effective graphic technique of mind-mapping with a Habitude analysis action plan. By mapping out your Habitudes in a visual way, you connect thoughts, emotions and behaviors around a central goal and create an action plan that works.

"I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and highly recommend it to anyone feeling stuck or ready to make changes in their life...
The genuineness of presentation; [Rita's] passion and energy is inspiring." Kristina LeDuc, attendee, Change Your Habitudes, Change Your Life Workshop, October 2017

Pintastic Pinball Expo Confirms Summer Dates and Special Guests

Pintastic Pinball is back and so is Pintastic New England, our region's only large-scale pinball and game room expo. Pintastic returns for its fourth year at the Sturbridge Host Hotel this summer and it's also expanding to four days in 2018: June 28-July 1. According to an NBC Nightly News feature from October 2017, pinball is experiencing a spectacular resurgence in popularity. Did you know there are more than 3,500 pinball tournaments a year - hosted in 24 countries and with over 100,000 competitors - and with a surge of interest from all age demographics?

Guests of this summer silver ball event in Sturbridge will experience eighty years of pinball innovation as well as video games, fun and entertainment for kids, and cool ideas for your home and game room in one convenient and well-equipped venue, the lakeside Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference Center. Adults and youngsters can buy a ticket and enjoy the free pinball with nearly 200 machines set on Free Play (no quarters needed), over forty "old school" video arcade favorites, pinball and video game tournaments, pinball seminars, repair classes, a charity auction, an extensive hall chock full of wicked cool vendors, and much more. Delicious food, ice-cold beverages including beer, and fantastic activities for kids will be available right on-site throughout the show. Kids will love our caricature artist, face painting, balloon animals, even a kids' pinball tournament with awesome prizes! Come for a casual afternoon or the whole weekend. When you're ready to catch your breath from the white-hot action inside, take a stroll on the grounds of the Sturbridge Host Hotel right down to the shores of beautiful Cedar Lake.

Pintastic has just confirmed several special guests for this year's show. Paul Faris, who introduced the richly-toned "process color" backglass art that is now considered standard for pinball games, is Pintastic's Guest Artist for 2018. Paul will give a presentation, sign autographs, and mingle with guests of the expo. He is currently working on designs for the Pintastic poster and T-shirts which will be available for sale at the show. Get yours signed by the artist whose pinball credits include classic titles such as Bally's Lost World, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Goldeneye, Total Recall, Paragon, and Phantom of the Opera, to name just a few!
John Borg
Also joining Pintastic's slate of special guests will be game designer John Borg of Stern Pinball. New Englanders appreciate John's work on the hugely popular Aerosmith table. He is also famous for designing X-Men, The Walking Dead, TRON, Guardians of the Galaxy, and some other rock-band-themed games. John Borg has been in pinball design for over 25 years and he will be available to chat and sign autographs for guests of the expo.

What else can you expect? Certainly, you can get your flipping fingers on many classic games as well as the newest and hottest titles out there. Last year, Stern's new Star Wars table made its world premiere at Pintastic and this year we expect to play great new games like the just released Iron Maiden from Stern Pinball. Limited Edition (LE) models of this game sold out in just hours! Among the seminars, which were packed with enthusiastic pinheads last year, there will be a deep dive into one of the most complex tables ever built, Pirates of the Caribbean by Jersey Jack Pinball. This beautiful beast features a 27" HD LCD display and allows players to choose one of 22 movie characters, each having specific strengths, and then fire their pinball-loaded cannon from the rocking Black Pearl on the upper playfield.

Do you have games in your collection that you'd like to bring with you to the show? Pintastic has revamped their incentives for game bringers. Games are ranked using a point system and the points you earn can be redeemed for incredible Pintastic merchandise including admission to the show, food and more prizes that are in the works. Get in touch or visit online to see what rewards bringing your treasured games can get you!

Pintastic ticket prices range from $7-$15 (child) and $25 (adult) for single day passes. Ultimate Experience Packages (two-day and four-day) are also available on a limited basis. Children under the age of 5 are admitted free. For times, tickets and more details, check out the redesigned Pintastic Pinball and Game Room Expo website at www.pintasticnewengland.com and make your room reservations soon. Take a Stab at Fencing... at Hitchcock!
Fencing at Hitchcock
Fencing is an ancient sport that embodies such virtues as honor, valor, and grace.

By Diana Caissie

Local residents of Brimfield and the surrounding towns have been showing up in increasing numbers to Andrew Bloch's fencing lessons at Hitchcock Academy on Wednesday evenings. Lessons are offered for both youths (ages 8-16) and adults (ages 16 and up).

Fencing is a sport that was developed from the art of swordsmanship, used for dueling and self-defense. Over the early years of the Renaissance, schools of fencing in Spain, Italy and France were equally popular but were primarily used to train soldiers for the military. In the mid-18th century the focus of fencing shifted to a sport with the publication of The School of Fencing by Domenico Angelo, an Italian fencing master of a school in London. Much of his posture and footwork are still used in today's sport.

In Bloch's lessons, he places a heavy emphasis on the proper footwork and technique before his students fence for the first time. Discussion of the classic French techniques are vital for safety and provide a good foundation to become great fencers.

If you are interested in learning how to fence at Hitchcock Academy, see www.hitchcockacademy.org for more information or call 413-245-9977.

An Evening to Benefit Woman In Business Scholarship Fund
Dinner at 8
May 23, Sturbridge Host Hotel, 5:30-8:00pm

Over the last 27 years, Woman In Business, Inc. (WIB), a 501c(3) that supports women by fostering networking, sharing information and experiences, and providing educational opportunities, has given out over $40,000 in scholarships to over 100 young women for their continuing education!
This year we are asking for broader support from our community. WIB has teamed up with the Tantasqua High School Drama Club to host a Murder Mystery Dinner and Interactive Theatre Experience, "Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine," to help raise money for our scholarship program. It's
an experience you won't soon forget!

"In a banquet room, guests are expecting a dinner theatre show.  But when the guest of honor, Eleanor Van Heusen, falls face first into her plate of spaghetti, the guests are suddenly witnesses to a murder!  Luckily, Inspector Bungles is there to help solve this whodunit.  To say the least, Eleanor wasn't loved by all.  In fact, all her family members and even the chef have reasons to kill her.  Hilarity ensues as they each reveal their own murder plans, yet all claim innocence. "

$30 per person
. Evening includes Dinner, Performance, Sweet Treats Dessert Buffet and Penny Auction. All proceeds to benefit WIB's Scholarship Fund.

We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail alexandra_mcnitt@cmschamber.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
