April 2018 Student Success Updates
|
Spring semester is in full swing and we have loads of updates, from supporting undergraduates in math to the annual Student Success Summit! |
Recalculating Gateway Mathematics
|
At MSU we are committed to revising our math pathways to help every student gain the math skills and knowledge needed to graduate.
The Department of Mathematics,
the Department of Statistics and Probability,
the Program for Mathematics Education (PRIME)
, and the Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology
have collaborated to revise our curriculum to better meet the needs of our students. We have taken three complementary approaches to enhance student success in gateway mathematics: the development of quantitative literacy courses (MTH 101 and MTH 102), the creation of a two-semester version of college algebra (MTH 103A and 103B), and coordinated refinements of our math placement system.

Registration is Open for the Student Success Summit and Teaching & Learning Spring Conference
|
This event leverages the campus community's collective skills and knowledge about teaching, learning, and administrative processes to advance student persistence and success, and benefit the entire university community.
The Data Summit, now called the Student Success Summit, will be on
Tuesday May 8th from 11:00am to 7:00pm
. The program includes a welcome and three 60 minute break-out sessions with 5-6 presentations each about this year's student success efforts. This will be followed by a reception and poster session at 4:30pm where we will be joined by faculty as they kick off the Teaching and Learning Spring conference by attending our evening summit activities.

Help Us Collect Undergraduate Feedback on the MSU Experience
|
The Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) survey is an opportunity for undergraduate students to provide honest and confidential feedback on their undergraduate experience at MSU and the campus climate
:
what is important to them, what is working well, and what we can do better.
Right now, we have a 5.2% overall response rate, and we need your help to increase this. Our goal is to reach 35%, and the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education is offering several incentives for student completion.
We know that students are most likely to respond if they are asked by someone in a program or department that they belong to at MSU.

Learning, Teaching, and a Culture of Care
|
"A number of faculty, students, and staff have been working on a new approach to educator professional development. It is an inclusive and community-based framework for how we can all grow as teachers and learners. It has been clear to each of us that this effort is, at heart, a culture change project.
"We are clearly a community in need of change, and we are a community in great pain. We hope that our cultural work on educator professional development is a resource for change, if not healing. I want to write from that collective work on educator professional development, but I'd like to risk a personal response."
Jeff Grabill, Associate Provost for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, reflects on why caring matters in higher education.

Sonia Sotomayor Memoir Selected for One Book, One Community

The City of East Lansing and MSU announced the book selection for the 2018 One Book, One Community program: "My Beloved World," a memoir by Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Supreme Court of the United States.
The One Book, One Community program encourages the East Lansing-MSU community to read the same book and come together to explore its themes and issues at a variety of campus and community events each fall.

Applications Due This Month for Teaching & Learning Fellowships

Teaching and learning are at the heart of MSU student success efforts. Two AAN fellowship programs on teaching and learning are fantastic opportunities to grow in a community of practice while developing a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project, or honing your teaching and learning skills.

Marathon of Majors Gives Guidance
|
Deciding on a major can be an overwhelming process. A student's major may determine his or her entire academic path, internships and, ultimately, his or her career. This is why the Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative hosts the semi-annual Marathon of Majors event for students who want to explore a variety of majors and programs.
