Events for July 9-22

On July 15 at 7:30 pm, come enjoy a rejuvenating evening with a rising star among young Chilean singer-songwriters, Pascuala Ilabaca, who creates music that is rooted in Chilean folk traditions and informed by a childhood moving from Barcelona to Chile, Mexico to India, and back again, while incorporating strands of jazz, pop, rock, and other influences into the mix. On July 22 at 7:30 pm, Maferefun Orisha, A Salute to the Saints, will introduce you to the pantheon of Afro-Cuban gods and goddesses followed by a performance and lesson by Odara Dance Ensemble and the Bataleros de Querque.
 
Domingos en Arte, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music, AMP Concerts, and the NHCC, is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC's charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music, drinks, and delicious Latin cuisine. Thank you to our media sponsor Telemundo 2 Kasa.
Race and Social Movements in New Mexico

Aaron Dixon, former captain of the Black Panther Party, Seattle Chapter; author of My People are Rising; and speaker at college campuses and community centers nationwide, will offer a talk, "Race and Social Movements in New Mexico," July 19 at 6 pm.  This event is part of educational programming related to  People Powered: New Mexicans and Social Movements.
Circo Radical Performance

On July 20-21 at 7 pm, come enjoy an original multi-generational circus performance built by 10 advanced circus students and 10 professional circus artists who work together intensively over 10 days to conceptualize, train, re search, design, and develop new work using stilts, live music, juggling, aerials, clown and mask. This is a free event with a suggested donation of $5.
Jugamos Juntos: Vamos Afuera--Who, Who Was Ultima's Owl and Cantando la Cultura

Join us at the NHCC Saturdays in June, July and August for Jugamos Juntos, summer family programming from 10:30 am to noon. On July 14, joins us for Cantando la Cultura and on July 21, meet different live, non-releasable owls that live in and around the Albuquerque Bosque. Learn about what makes them special by observing and sketching these beautiful creatures! There are limited spaces available so  please pre-register.

July screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series continue Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. On July 12 at 7 pm, come see Episode 1, "The Nigerians," of The New Americans, documenting the struggles of the Nwidor family, Nigerians forced to flee their homes because of military oppression. We watch as their attempts to adapt and succeed in their new lives In the U.S. crumble at times into despair, but also share with them moments of hope as they struggle to attain their American Dream. 


On July 15 at 4 pm, come see the latest installment of GOV-TV's documentary film series on Albuquerque neighborhoods that focuses on Barelas, arguably the oldest settlement in the area. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Bareleños and members of the Artful Life Community Art Ensemble, and refreshments.


For students entering grades 6-9, the Hochberg Summer Creative Writing Program is a free two-day workshop in which writers engage with flash fiction and poetry. Workshops take place July 11-12, with a public performance on Thursday, July 12 at 6 pm. This event is a partnership between NHCC and NM School for the Arts.


Every Tuesday at the NHCC is  ¡Baile! Casino de Rueda (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class. On July 20 at 9:30 am, join our monthly gathering for colcheras led by Annette Gutierrez Turk. Or, come see  Mundos de Mestizaje, Frederico Vigil's fresco depicting thousands of years of Hispanic and pre-Hispanic history, every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 pm.

Playing Cuban roots music out of East Los Angeles, Changüí Majadero is a blazing five-piece band that has honed a deeply informed and highly personal take on changüí, a surging Afro-Cuban musical tradition that took shape in the late 19th century on the eastern side of the island around Guantanamo.
