News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

This summer, by popular demand, we are bringing back "Lawn Chair Theologians" . Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 24 and Wednesday, August 21 , from 7:00-8:30 p.m.   Bring a lawn chair if you wish and a beverage and snack to share.   We will meet out on the lawn of the circle drive.   If it rains or is too humid or uncomfortable we will meet in the Great Hall. This is an opportunity to have conversation on any number of religious or spiritual topics. There is no pre-reading or preparation needed, just bring an open mind and a willingness to listen to others. All participants will be invited to write down some suggestions for discussion, and we will place them in a hat and pull them out randomly.   We will spend time discussing as many topics as we have time during each session. There are no right answers, and you may discuss the topics chosen or just sit and listen.   In years past we discussed many different topics, such as "Was Mary really a Virgin?"; "Should the Church offer communion to the non-baptized, why or why not?"; "If God created everything, did God create evil?"   Come with your ideas, as all of us can be a "Lawn Chair Theologian."

Many of you know that our Organist and Choir Director Sandy Molyneux is recovering from a heart attack. She is currently in rehab so please keep her in your prayers. Sandy is a tough Texan but she needs our patience as she needs time to recover. We will keep you updated on her progress.   I am thankful to our in house talent who have stepped forward to provide music at the 10:00 a.m. service: Margaret Wood, Peter Carroll, EL Nyberg, and Del Smith.

Please Mark your calendar for our next Free Community Meal on July 20 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.   Chef Tom has planned a great menu of smoked BBQ pulled pork, smoked mac and cheese, potato salad, with a dessert of sherbet and cookies. If you wish to volunteer for this month or in the future please contact Tracy Higgins .

May you have a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday,

Blessings,
Fran+

Presiding Bishop in Chicago July 31

St. James Cathedral in Chicago is hosting  An Evening with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry , on Wednesday, July 31 , at 6:30 p.m.   Tickets may be purchased online for $22, and the price includes a signed copy of his book,   "The Power of Love: Sermons, Reflections, and Wisdom to Uplift and Inspire".    If you are interested, please get your tickets ASAP, as they will likely sell out.   Rev. Fran and a few parishioners have already expressed an interest in attending, so perhaps a group could get together and car pool, or take the train. Contact Fran if you're interested. Tickets can be purchased online here.

Organ Concert Opportunity

Last Fall, several parishioners attended two organ concerts at Church of the Holy Communion in Lake Geneva , which benefitted the restoration of their 1883 Pipe Organ . This Spring, the organ was disassembled and underwent a complete restoration.   On Sunday, August 4 , at 6:00 p.m., the church will present a Gala Concert to celebrate the return of the organ .   If you are interested in attending this concert, there are flyers on the Narthex table with a ticket order form, as well as many other details .   There is also a poster and additional order forms on the bulletin board in the hallway.

You may also see the information, and print a ticket order form here.   Just click on the photo of the Gala Concert.
