Synopsis:
Hyde Park, New York, was established in 1821, a small town on the Hudson River. Its claim to fame -- and what attracts people to this day -- are the grand estates, lush landscapes, and lavish lifestyles of its most prominent citizens. Wealthy families like the Vanderbilts, Rogerses, Roosevelts, Dinsmores, and Millses built homes to match their place in society. Many of these estates represented the pinnacle of Gilded Age life along the river.
Hyde Park was a perfect location because of its easy access to New York City.
HYDE PARK IN THE GILDED AGE shows the wealthy river families -- whose houses were built by prominent architects and filled with treasures from abroad -- in all their Gilded Age splendor. Other images show the families who worked as coachmen, gardeners, and parlor maids supporting the lifestyles of the region's prominent families.
Former town historian
Carney Rhinevault and current historian
Shannon Butler have compiled images from both sides of the story in and around the town during the Gilded Age. These images come from several collections, including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, the National Park Service, and the Town of Hyde Park Historical Society.
