March 2020 GVCO Newsletter
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Given the gravity of the COVID-19 coronavirus situation in Pennsylvania, across the U.S. and globally, GVCO recognizes the impact this has on the friends, neighbors and families here in the Great Valley community and surrounding region. Being “a community” and caring about one another at this point of uneasiness and concern becomes that much more critical.

Having just come off a phenomenal GVBL winter rec league season, culminating in a fabulous fundraising event at the Desmond attended by hundreds of community members, continues to show me what a wonderful community we live in. The joy, smiles and support that I’ve witnessed over the past several months is a testament to the tremendous people involved in the district.

Moving forward into the spring and beyond, know that GVCO will make sound and thoughtful decisions for all those involved in our programming. The safety and well-being of the families in our community is on the forefront of our minds.

Our mission remains steadfast …”to help build a strong, vibrant and connected community by providing facilities, activities and programs enriching the lives of all local residents.

Please take care of yourselves.

Keith Walsh, GVCO Executive Director
COMMUNITY CORNER

The second session of Junior Hoopsters wrapped up last week when they received their medals for all of their hard work. Our little hoopsters learned to pass, dribble, shoot, and steal the ball in order to prepare them for the All Star Game!!! We hope to see them all back next season!

Crew
As with other programming, GV Crew will be on hold during this period. We will send updates as soon as we have them. Stay well!

GV Crew is excited to announce that our spring season is underway with ten new rowers including six 8th graders.

Crew is a great walk-on sport with no experience necessary, so it is great for students who want to try something new.

With 26 team members, GV Crew practices include workouts and timed intervals on the ergs, fitness routines, and rowing on the river. This spring season brings 6 regattas on the Schuylkill River.
Go Crew!

Pickleball
GV Pickleball welcomed pro-duo Steve Henricks and Angie Weldon for two clinics in February and March. Both were sold out and wildly popular! Players learned a variety of different pickle shots while also working on basics to develop their game.

Pickleball continuously packs the house on a weekly basis especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays! They have continued to grow immensely over the past year.

Topping off a great year, GV Pickleball is especially excited to host their end of season bash, with sponsors REMAX Fine Homes/Chuck Barbera team and Bomba Taco + Bar. There will be fun games, food, drink and music to celebrate!

The Kopf Family
Ian and Janine Kopf have lived in Great Valley since 2007. Both natives of the southeaster PA area, they made the move to GV after they got married. They have one daughter, Maddie who is 11 and plays in the GVBL league. Ian works at Vanguard in Malvern as a senior level Product Owner for Vanguard’s Personal Advisor Services, where he builds technologies to help advisors manage assets for clients. Janine is a Senior Accountant at Vertex, Inc. in King of Prussia.

Their first experience with GVCO was in 2 nd grade when a parent of Maddie’s classmate mentioned they were going to sign her up to try basketball at GVBL, and suggested they do the same. "Once she started playing we quickly saw how special of an organization GVCO was – the volunteers all cared about the kids, they weren't there just to coach, but to make a positive impact on the lives of the kids in the community", says Ian. After her first GVBL season I volunteered to coach the summer league and I have been involved ever since, coaching and coordinating rec league as well as coaching the 6 th grade girls tournament team.

With all of the time my family spends at the GVBL center, supporting GVCO in it’s effort to build a new center was a no-brainer. Great Valley is an amazing community and deserves a community center that reflects it. We have made so many great friends at the gym over the years which will last beyond the time we spend playing and coaching at the GVBL center and we want to support future generations of Great Valley families.

I would encourage all members of Great Valley community to support the GVCO capital campaign – donations of any amount add up and can help us get the new center built. Many companies such as Vanguard offer matching gift programs which increase your impact.
