Happy 4th of July!
Can you believe it, 2019 will be half over this month and we're already planning for RockFest. June was full of fun buying trips for us. Amanda went to Denver and restocked all our metaphysical products at INATS, the International New Age Trade Show. I went to the annual Las Vegas Gem and Jewelry Show and found several new designs incorporating natural stones in assorted styles. We went to the Dallas Mart and World Trade Center with over 100,000 sq. ft. of exhibitors for the annual Total Home & Gift Market and found several new goodies for the kids, your home and office and natural personal care lines. I can't wait until you see all the new product we found.

A great time was had by all at our International Agate Expo last month at the Norris Conference Center. Vendors from around the world showcased their phenomenal agates and shared their knowledge and experiences for three days in talks, presentations and displays. A great big thanks to the Austin Gem & Mineral Society for all of their help and support. We had such a good time and was so well received by everyone, we are contemplating having another Agate and Mineral Show next year.     

Since July is the official month for vacations, I want to share with you a new web site that is being launched by Rock & Gem magazine. It is in its infancy still, but already offers a wonderful tool to find rock shops and dig sites all over the United States. Just type in the city you're going to and it will give you shop and dig information around where you are going to and even sites along the way. A must for us rock hounds! I will be traveling to Las Vegas again the end of this month to attend the Las Vegas 2019 Summer Market. I see more new finds in my future and foresee lots of new and wonderful nature treasures in yours.


We'll be open the 4th of July so you can come visit and see some of the new items we've been processing. Remember to play safe on the 4th.

The Treasure Tome: A Trove of Knowledge

Iolite: The Intuition Stone

Iolite is the blue-violet variety of the mineral cordierite, (Mg, Fe)2Al3(AlSi5O18). Cordierite has many interesting optical properties including a high birefringence and dichroism. Dichroism literally translates from Greek as "two colored" and describes when a mineral appears different colors down its different axes. In the case of Iolite, the gemstone changes color from yellow to purple, the color for which iolite is named (in Greek ios meaning "violet"). Despite its name, Iolite is better described as indigo in hue.
 
Iolite has a strong birefringence or polarizing effect, which could make it great for reducing glare when fashioned into a lens. According to Robert Weldon, director of the Richard T. Liddicoat Gemological Library and Information Center, this property of Iolite made it useful for ancient Vikings to navigate the seas when it was cloudy out and Iolite became known as "Viking Compass Stone". The idea of Iolite acting as a tool for guidance and navigation has pervaded into modern metaphysical and spiritual uses for this stone as well.    
 
Iolite is probably the foremost stone used for foresight and is one of the most sought after stones for Third Eye Chakra work as it is one of the few truly "indigo" colored stones in nature. According to Melody, author of Love is in the Earth, Iolite stimulates visionary prowess by inciting visions and improving their accuracy, especially d uring shamanic journeying, astral travel, and guided meditations. She says specifically that
 Iolite "has been used to stimulate a compass, such that one may have knowledge of directions and directional forces," helpin
g one to navigate obstacles that might block progress towards harmony within oneself and one's relationships.  
 
Iolite not only helps one to access informatio
n with increased accuracy, but it also guides you in applying that information for the greatest good. In other words, this helps you to not only know what is going on, but the best way to present or share that knowledge so that it is well-received and beneficial to the recipient. This has led me to coin the mnemonic "Eye of Light" (I-O-Lite) to remember that this gem not only activates one's Third-Eye, but also enhances our ability to bring harmony to the world through enlightenment.

Ruby

The red variety of the mineral Corundum, Al2O3, Ruby has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale making it one of the most durable gemstones on Earth.  Being an extremely hard stone with no cleavage, it should come as no surprise that Ruby has spiritual properties related to endurance and stamina.  Ruby, associated with the Root (Physical), Sacral (Creative) and Heart (Emotional) Chakras, represents vital life force and aids with passionate love and reproductive health.   
 
In ancient times this gemstone was known as Carbuncle, and according to Melody's Love is in the Earth, Rubies were used in the casting of lots to aid in mediation of disputes.  Furthermore, Melody says that Ruby is the "stone of nobility," helping to amplify energy, enhance mental focus and incite diplomacy.  Ruby can occur in many different host rocks, and therefor you can find Ruby in Kyanite, Ruby in Fuchsite and Ruby in Zoisite in addition to Ruby by itself.  Each of these varieties has additional metaphysical properties and can be quite difficult to distinguish.  Visit our website to learn some tricks in differentiating between these different Ruby rocks! Considering this is a first time for our newsletter to feature a Sanskrit mantra of the month, of course, it must begin with Ganesha! T raditionally Ganesha always comes first in any japa, the meditative repetitions of a mantra, opening the door to auspicious results.   Ganesha is well-known as the Remover of Obstacles, but he is also an eloquent scribe, gifted musician and benevolent guide.
 
The Ganesha mantra we'll practice this month is a favorite among many, even being taught to  little school children to help them with their studies.

If you have a mala you can say this sacred mantra once per bead. If you don't have one, no worries, just sit quietly and chant it repeatedly. Throughout your day notice how Ganesha will gently remind you to silently chant his mantra as you go about your daily tasks.
 
A loose translation of this mantra is 'Om and Salutations to The Remover of Obstacles'
