TIFTON'S
MARATHON MAN
MIKE BEEMAN DOES IT AGAIN;
COMPLETES HIS 41st BOSTON MARATHON

Tift County High School teacher Mike Beeman has hit another milestone: On Monday he completed his 41st consecutive Boston Marathon of 26.2 miles.
BEEMAN

"Thank you all for the prayers. I was nervous coming in due to some old-man injuries," said Beeman, 60, who had a completion time of 4:52:13.

"Thanks to Ryan Byrnes and John Davis for the help and advice. I literally prayed the whole way as the weather was the toughest I have experienced in 41 years. The best thing was seeing Melanie Beeman

and Jarod Beeman at the finish line. To God be the glory."

Beeman and the other 30,000 runners splashed and shivered through a drenching, icy rain with temperatures in the mid 30s and wind gusts of up to 32 mph during the 122nd Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual marathon.

Beeman, a  marketing teacher and  co-coach of TCHS's  cross country team, is  No. 8 on the list of runners with the most  consecutive participation since the  Boston Marathon began in  1897. On MondayBen Beach, 68, of Maryland ran his 51st consecutive marathon, completing the 26.2-mile course in 5:48:35.

Beach is one of only nine runners who entered this year with a streak of at least 40 straight finishes in Boston. A total of 82 participants had competed in 25 consecutive races.  John A. Kelley, who died in 2004, has the record of starting in 61 Boston Marathons and completing a record 58 of them.

The Boston Marathon is one of the world's most prestigious 26.2-mile runs. It is always held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday in April. It was inspired by the success of the first marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics.

DERRICK DOVE & THE PEACEMAKERS
HIT RIGHT CHORD WITH NEW ALBUM

A Tifton musician's new album is  creating a buzz around the world.

Derrick Dove, a singer-songwriter-guitarist, and his band has had their recently released first album favorably reviewed by an online music magazine in the Netherlands

Blues Magazine recommends to its readers the self-titled album "Derrick Dove & the Peacekeepers," calling it "a fine Southern rock album" that lovers of the genre should add to their list of albums to purchase.

" This band from Tifton, Ga., consists of singer and guitarist Derrick Dove, Jamie Richardson on drums, Don Hill III on bass and keyboardist Johnathan 'JT' Thomas," the magazine wrote.

" Derrick Dove has set himself the goal to play his songs in as many places in the world as possible and, thus, to maintain his family. That must be possible with an album like this. The style of the band is, as mentioned, Southern rock, and then the kind that is roughly somewhere between the Allman Brothers and The Tedeschi Trucks Band and with a high Bob Seger content."
The Tifton band has also found their album's songs being played on satellite radio. Last Wednesday, "we kicked off the 'Rack of Blues' show on SiriusXm," Dove says. "This is a feeling that will never get old!"

Dove is well-known to local audiences and has been playing around the region for years, sometimes with his dad, "Dangerous" Don Dove

The album was released in February and is available on  Amazon.com.

LOCAL WOMAN'S CLUB JOINS
GEORGIA DAY OF SERVICE
COLLECTING ITEMS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS

On Saturday, April 28, GFWC Tifton 20th Century Library Club members will join thousands of members of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in Georgia in their local communities, collecting personal care items for local domestic violence shelters and raising awareness of their national signature project: Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention

Tifton club members will be outside the Tifton Walmart on U.S. Highway 82 West from 10
a.m.-2 p.m. greeting the public, sharing information about local resources for victims and  collecting items for victims of all ages. Items include toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, diapers, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, hair brushes, feminine hygiene products, razors,   toothbrushes, toothpaste and gift cards.

Every nine seconds in the U.S. a woman is assaulted or beaten. Studies show that 3 million to 4 million children between the ages of three and 17 are at risk of exposure to domestic violence each year.

GFWC Georgia members have chosen April 28 during Volunteers in Action Week as their GFWC Georgia Day of Service to be a visible force in local communities, helping domestic violence victims break the cycle of violence and allowing them and their families to thrive on their road to recovery.

"The consequences of domestic violence can span generations, and it is more important than ever that GFWC Georgia members come together to raise awareness and advocate for those victims who do not feel they have a voice," said GFWC Georgia President Ida Dorvee

Tifton 20th Century Library Club meets the second Tuesday of each month, September-May, and holds a fashion show each May. New members are welcome. For information, call or text Shirene Daniell, 229-392-4060, or Genie McCook, 229-386-9990.
