The momentum to treat in America is unmatched around the globe

Samuel Harrington, MD, in a KevinMD post dated April 14, 2018, illustrates via an anecdote how the U.S. health system tends to over-treat with expensive and sometimes deadly outcomes.

Compared with other developed countries, American medicine is unexceptional except in terms of cost, convenience, and self-promotion, according to Dr. Harrington. In terms of things that matter, such as life expectancy, infant mortality, or quality of life after sixty-ﬁve, the United States ranks in the lower third of developed countries, he adds.

An April 9th post by Becker's Hospital Review reveals the top places to work in healthcare. The list highlights hospitals, health systems and healthcare companies that provide competitive wages, benefits and vacation packages, promote diversity within the workforce and facilitate employee engagement and professional growth.

Nine Florida healthcare systems/facilities made the list in the Hospitals, Health Systems & Medical Groups category including Nicklaus Children's Health System, B ayCare Health System, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Halifax Health and Central Florida Health. Florida however had no firms listed in the Health IT & Revenue Cycle Management, Management & Consulting. Healthcare Staffing/Practice Management or Service Providers & Suppliers categories. In the Others category, Florida boasts one entrant: WestCMR based in Clearwater.

FDA restricts sale and distribution of Essure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued <on 4.9.18> an order to restrict the sale and distribution of the < Bayer's> Essure device to ensure that all women considering use of the permanent contraception device are provided with adequate risk information so that they can make informed decisions. The FDA is taking this step after becoming aware that some women were not being adequately informed of Essure's risks before getting the device implanted, despite previous significant efforts to educate patients and doctors about the risks associated with this device.

We remain committed to carefully and thoroughly considering all new data and evidence and will continue to work with patients affected by this device as part of our process," said Terri Cornelison, MD, PhD, assistant director for the health of women in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
