Dear Friend:

I hope you had a safe and happy July 4th holiday. Over 240 years ago, our great country was founded. We have continued to strive to achieve the ideals on which it was based and have so very much to be proud of, while we clearly have more work to do.  I was glad to be able to join in so many wonderful July 4th celebrations throughout the district.

In the face of the very disturbing federal policy on separating families at our border, on Tuesday, July 3rd,  I was fortunate to be able to join my colleagues in government on a tour of Rising Ground, formerly Leake & Watts, which is housing children separated from their parents at the border as well as other unaccompanied minors. Read more about this visit in the section below.

An important bill that I co-sponsored which would help reduce the risk of opioid use is now on the Governor's desk, having passed both houses of the Legislature and now awaiting signature. Read more about S.9100/A.9576-B in the section to follow.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you have a problem, or let me know if there is an event in your neighborhood you think I should attend.

I'm honored to be able to serve as your State Senator.

Warm regards,

Shelley B. Mayer

ESTABLISHING A STATEWIDE
DRUG TAKE BACK PROGRAM

The easy access to unused opioid drugs in our homes is a serious problem that contributes to the epidemic of opioid abuse in our communities. I was proud to co-sponsor a bill which would require most drug manufacturers to operate statewide drug take back programs, and it would require most large chain pharmacies to provide drug take back receptacles in their stores.

S.9100/A.9576-B would require manufacturers of commonly abused prescription medication to operate a statewide drug take back program, either individually or jointly with other manufacturers, and cover the full cost of implementing such program.  It also also requires all chain pharmacies with 10 locations or more in the state to provide a safe and accessible drug take back method for their customers. Prescription drug manufacturers are also required to cover the cost pharmacies incur by operating the drug take back program.

The bill went to Governor Cuomo on June 28th. I urge him to sign it promptly as we should do everything we can to curb the pain and devastation that opioid abuse has caused statewide, and here in the 37th Senate District.

TOURING FACILITY HOSTING CHILDREN
SEPARATED  FROM PARENTS AT THE BORDER

Click here to watch a brief segment on News 12 about my tour of Rising Ground.

On Tuesday, July 3rd, I was thankful to have the opportunity to tour Rising Ground, formerly Leake & Watts, located in Yonkers, which is currently housing children who were separated at the border from their parents as well as other unaccompanied minors. To protect the confidentiality of minors, we were not able to speak to or meet with the children.

Many concerned residents have been questioning how children separated from parents at the border are housed in facilities in New York without the knowledge of elected officials.  Non-profits like Rising Ground are licensed by the State Office of Children and Families, but  are not operated by the State of New York. These facilities have contracts with federal agencies like the Office of Refugee Resettlement and under the contract, provide temporary housing and supportive services to these young people.

Having worked closely with Rising Ground in the past, I presumed, and through the tour was reassured again, that they continue to do the best they can for all the children in their care under these terrible circumstances. That being said, I am profoundly opposed to the policies of splitting up families, and I will continue to speak up against these and similar policies by our federal government.

RECENT EVENTS IN THE 37th DISTRICT

Did you know that in April, 2018 alone, Westchester County received over 10.5 MILLION scam phone calls? Thursday, June 28, I was glad to continue my series on "How to Avoid Getting Scammed: A Guide for Seniors" with Assistant Attorney General Janice Powers at the Port Chester Seniors Center.
I was pleased to host the inaugural meeting of my Youth Advisory Council at my District Office. I am happy to have students from Port Chester, Rye, Eastchester, New Rochelle, Pelham, and Yonkers included and I thank them for their insight and enthusiasm!
Every year, my husband and I give a civic participation scholarship to one deserving student. This year's winner is Iomanes Rodas, pictured here along with her mother. Iomanes is on her way to SUNY Albany and we have high hopes for her!
Had a wonderful meeting learning more about the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library with Director Robin Lettieri, Board President Veronica O'Connor, and Port Chester Mayor Fritz Falanka.

Had a great time at a July 4th celebration in White Plains with Mayor Tom Roach, Assemblymembers Amy Paulin & David Buchald, County Legislator Ben Boykin and others.
