Seniors 75 and over must go to the DMV because they need a road test

For your convenience, Fremont Township is hosting a Mobile Drivers License Renewal on April 13 with Secretary of State Jesse White’s office. In order to renew your license or State ID at this event, your license or ID must be expiring within one year of April 12, 2019. (April 12 birthdate is the latest)

Seniors over 65 can get a free lifetime State ID.  If you have moved and your address has changed you can get that changed here. You will need proof of your address.
Drivers who will be 75 years of age or older when their current drivers license expires are required to pass a road test to renew their license.  That is not offered at this event. Anyone 75 or over must go to the DMV for their license.

You will no longer immediately be issued a new permanent driver’s license/ID card at the end of the application process. After fraud checks have been conducted to ensure your identity, a high quality, secure driver’s license/ID card will be printed at a central facility and sent via U.S. mail within 15 business days to your address. You will receive a temporary, secure paper driver’s license or ID card, which is valid for 90 days. In addition, the facility employee will return your old driver’s license/ID card back to you.

AIR TRAVEL WITH YOUR TEMPORARY DRIVER’S LICENSE/ID CARD.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, present your temporary, secure paper driver’s license/ID card in conjunction with your old driver’s license/ID card to board an airplane.

You may also renew your license plates at this event. The mobile does not accept cash. Please pay by Check or Charge, but there is a fee for using a credit card.

Illinoisans Allowed to Deduct Prepaid Property Taxes
Message from Lake County Treasurer David Stolman
The U.S. Department of the Treasury agreed that an advisory issued by the IRS does not address Illinois and, therefore, taxpayers in Illinois are not bound by the IRS guidance and are able to deduct their prepaid property taxes.

Background:
  • On December 27, 2017, the IRS issued an advisory regarding pre-payments of 2018 state and local real property taxes in 2017.

  • The advisory provides information and examples relating to whether a taxpayer who makes a pre-payment in 2017 of real property taxes for 2018 or later would be eligible to deduct the payment on his or her 2017 federal tax return.

  • Illinois is unique in that property tax payments made each year are actually paying for the previous year.

  • As a result, prepaid property taxes made at the end of 2017 were actually prepaying 2017 property taxes, not 2018.

  • The United States Treasury agreed that the advisory does not address Illinois.

Taxpayers in Illinois are not bound by the IRS guidance and they are able to deduct their prepaid property taxes.
