FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
Building Talent in the Building Industry
Michael E Strech President and CEO
As we know the current labor shortage has been an ongoing issue in the construction industry. Our concern over labor isn't new, way back in 2004 the BIA created a Workforce Development Committee to address the issue.  Working with the Home Builder's Institute (HBI) and a grant awarded from the Department of Labor, the BIA developed a new 501(c)(3) The North State Building Industry Foundation (NSBIF) in 2006.

Over the past twelve years, NSBIF has worked to resolve labor fluctuations in our industry. When times were tough during the recession NSBIF was awarded over $5 million dollars from Department of Labor funded agencies to assist 406 displaced workers, and unemployed veterans, find employment within our industry.

When the economy improved, it was employers who needed help finding workers. NSBIF was there to help, as a result in 2016 we launched the Trades Jobs Fair, which has attracted over 500 applicants and 150 employers to participate.  We also launched the 5kin5 Jobs site with 100 employers posting jobs and over the two years and have 456 applicants apply for posted jobs.

Over the last two years, working with builders and trade contractors, we have placed more than 150 high school juniors in summer internships. These students work for four weeks rotating trade partners and develop a variety of skills. The program also offers graduating seniors employment upon graduation. In 2018 we hired 57 seniors from this effort. The students attend after school modules with seven different trades at eleven high schools to prepare for the summer program.

The Foundation will continue to closely with local colleges, high schools and construction training organizations to ease the labor shortage efforts in the area.  Every year we work hard to expand the efforts being made and we encourage all of our members to get involved with this program. The Placer County Board of Supervisors recently approved the county's final 2018-19 budget of $970.9 million, an increase of 12% from the previous year's budget of $866 million. Property taxes, the county's largest revenue source, continue to trend upwards as property values increase. Sales taxes, transient occupancy taxes and other revenue sources also continue to improve; however, growth from those revenues is expected to soften as financial experts contemplate the potential for an economic slowdown.

NORTH STATE BUILDING INDUSTRY FOUNDATION
School Day, School Daze
NSBIF has a new high school intern, Guillermo, from Cristo Rey High School. Guillermo works in our office once a week on design and social media projects. His perspective is helping us to better understand how to engage Generation Z to boost our workforce development efforts. Guillermo is interested in architecture and is considering a trades internship this summer.

We're also working with "Student Ambassadors" from American River College, Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College. The Ambassadors are students from CTE courses who help us promote college enrollment and CTE courses at community events. They were on site last Friday to assist at Trades Day, a fair designed to introduce more than 1,500 local high school students to a variety of career opportunities in the industry.

Students from select schools in the Placer County and Elk Grove school districts will also have the opportunity throughout this school year to participate in after-school workshops with the Lennar trades. Students will have hands-on learning experiences with Eagle, Heritage One, Interior Logic, L&S, Rescue Electric and Villara. This year, Lennar has introduced a prop that students will build and then add onto under the directions of the trades. Stay posted on their progress through our IG (@nsbif) and facebook (@BIAworkforce) accounts. Click any of the links below to follow NSBIF on social media!
