What is Partners in Policymaking?

Partners in Policymaking is a grant-funded initiative of The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council with significant matching funds from The Arc Maryland to prepare parents of children with disabilities and adults with disabilities to be effective advocates at state and local levels.  Partners participants receive support, education, and extensive training and many go on to testify at hearings, volunteer on advisory committees and boards, or support other parents with the IEP process for examples! 

Right now, 30 states, including Maryland and the District of Columbia, run classes. Since the program first was started in 1987, the total number of graduates has grown to more than 27,000 nation-wide.
 
The Arc Maryland has a long history of facilitating Partners in Policymaking with Developmental Disabilities Council funding beginning in 1998 through 2006. We are thrilled to be leading this state-wide effort once again this year!

Calling all Partners Grads! The Arc Maryland is putting on a graduate reunion for our past graduates of the Partners program. Join us for lunch on Saturaday, October 20 at 11:30 am as you look back at your time in the program with fellow graduates. We are looking forward to hearing how Partners changed you! MCE2019 MCE Leadership Class Begins

Last month, The Arc Maryland kicked off the Maryland Conference of Executives (MCE) Leadership:The Arc with the Class of 2019 . The MCE Leadership Series is an executive development program which prepares up-and-coming Arc professionals for executive leadership roles at state and local levels of The Arc.  The class is limited to 30 participants from all corners of the state, recommended by their Executive Leadership for participation in the program.  The selected employees are those who have demonstrated leadership skills and a passion for carrying out the mission of The Arc.  For more information about the program, please contact Ande Kolp, Executive Director of The Arc Maryland at  akolp@thearcmd.org.

Unfortunately, the Candidates for Governor Forum on Disabilities organized by the Maryland Disability Forum and originally scheduled for Friday, October 5 has been cancelled.  There is no information at this time about whether or not the forum will be rescheduled.  We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience.

Direct Support Professionals Week:
A Look Back

From September 9 to 15, we celebrated Direct Service Professional (DSP) Week across the nation. In the September Edition of our newsletter, we highlighted how the different Arc chapters around Maryland were celebrating DSPs and the crucial support they provide. Here is one more "Thank You" shout-out to the DSPs across the state who make a world of difference for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Check out some of the photos of various celebrations throughout the state!

The Arc Frederick County's in-house cafe is open every Wednesday through Friday in October from 11 am to 3 pm. All products are made in facility by people with developmental disabilities at Marcia's Bakery Training Program. Follow The Arc Frederick County on Facebook for their weekly menus!

Inclusion Works Breakfast

The Arc Prince George's County invites Business Leaders to join them on October 11 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. to discuss inclusion in the workplace and the value of hiring people with disabilities. The event will feature a panel discussion with business leaders who put Inclusion Works in to practice! Find out more on their  website .

Spend your night dancing at Hager Hall with The Arc of Washington County! The event begins at 6 p.m.  on Saturday, October 13.  The night will feature dinner, a dance exhibition, and even a dance competition! 25th Annual Golf Tournament
October 15

Join The Arc Prince George's County on Monday, October 15 starting at 7:30 a.m. for their 25th annual golf tournament. The day features breakfast and 18 holes at Renditions Golf Course. You can sign up here   from their website, and get more information about the day.

Apply for Social Security Workshop

Learn about the importance of applying for Social Security with The Arc Prince George's County on Tuesday, October 16. While the session begins at 6:30 pm, please plan to arrive early.  From 5 pm onward, there will be networking, refreshments and resource sharing.

Attend The Arc Baltimore's 17th Annual "Art in the Round", an art exhibition featuring works from artists with developmental disabilities, who will be there to discuss their art with you. The event starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 19. Art in the Round will also feature food, drink, and the chance to bid on your favorite pieces at the show. Education Series: Family Dynamics/Stressors

T he Arc Baltimore features educational seminars to help people's understanding of v arious topics regarding people with I/DD across the entire lifespan. On Tuesday, October 23, from 6 pm to 9  pm, the Arc Baltimore has a Seminar on Family Dynamics/Stressors which will take place at its Seton Business Park location, 6151 Metro Drive.

The Arc Montgomery County is hosting its Annual Halloween Gala on Friday, October 26 at Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Make sure to dress to impress (or scare) in your best Halloween costume for a "spooktacular" night including a silent auction, cocktail party, dinner, music, and even a live auction! 1K Fun Run/Walk/Roll

Keeping with the spirit of Halloween, The Arc Southern Maryland is putting on their 4th annual 5K Trick-or-Trot & 1K Fun Run/Walk/Roll. The day begins at noon on Sunday, October 28, with the 1K at 1pm, and the 5k at 2pm, but with plenty of fun in between including a costume contest, scavenger hunt, pumpkin decorating, and more. The Capital Steps

Get your laugh on   as   The Arc Carroll County welcomes back  the Political Satire Performance Group  the Capital Steps  for a hysterical performance. The show starts at 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 10, at Winters Mill High School. Tickets to the event can be purchased at the Carroll Arts Center,  All branches of the Carroll County Public Library, or from The Arc Carroll County both in person and online .
