Word from the Pastor:
Plans? What Plans?
The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps.
—Proverbs 16:9
So, we had lots of plans this Advent season. Lots of ’em. Youth ministry had several responsible, socially distanced activities planned for young people. So did children’s ministry. We had gorgeous worship services planned.
The crowning event of all of those plans was to come Christmas Eve. Though it would be cold outside, we were going to gather in the great outdoors at the front of the church. Socially distanced and masked, we were going to do our best to have some togetherness as we sang our favorite Christmas hymns. After 30 minutes of this, we were going to go home, gather around tables, and then gather at 7:30 for a virtual Christmas Eve service. It was going to be beautiful!
We were all so sure. We were sure until this current coronavirus surge bore down on our region. Now northeast Tennessee is fully in the grip of this terrible disease, and it is affecting our loved ones. It is overwhelming our medical facilities. What was once very far away has arrived on our doorstep.
I don’t write all of this to scare you, but to paint a realistic picture of where we are. It’s time to jettison our plans and deal with the facts on the ground. To that end, we went virtual last week because of a possible staff exposure. This week we are online only, just to be sure. We may well be virtual for several more weeks to come because we have reached the point where even our best plans to reduce risk are no longer enough.
And that beautiful plan to gather outside, in full compliance with the mandates? It’s been cancelled. On Christmas Eve we will be virtual only. Like our plans, the grass withers, and the flower fades…
What are we to make of all this confusion, change, and uncertainty? Our response cannot be fear. We may be a little off-balance and disappointed with how things are turning out, but we are not desolate and without hope. For those suffering from this virus, we are praying and expecting in hope for your full healing.
No, you see, we make plans, but God directs our paths, the writer of Proverbs tells us. We are where we are today for a purpose, contrary to how our minds and hearts find disappointment in the frustration of our plans.
And what is that purpose for a time like this? Our purpose is to stand in solidarity with the suffering. Our purpose is to serve the wounded. Our purpose is bear witness that the gates of hell may rage, but no power, no virus, and no sadness shall overcome the good hope we have in Jesus Christ.
So, yes. The next few weeks are likely to involve suffering and hardship and longing to go back to life and the deep desire to do all the things we miss. Egypt always was attractive to God’s people as they moved about in the heart of the wilderness (Exodus 16:3). But the past, the way things used to be, that’s not the destination. Through even this present hardship, I believe that God is firmly in control and is leading us somewhere. And for the time being, all we’ve got to do is let go of our plans.
In Christ,
Pastor Sam

Dave and Linda Need Our Prayers
Dave Welch took a turn for the worse Tuesday night and remains in the hospital. Medical personnel have started him on new treatments, and we are all confident that God will continue to heal him and bring him back to us whole. To that end, we are asking all members of our congregation to intensify your prayers for Pastor Dave and Linda.

No In-Person Worship Sunday
The session has suspended in-person worship for this Sunday, December 13, in order to protect the health of the congregation and staff. All Bible studies and other planned gatherings must be held virtually. Livestream worship will premiere at 9:00 and be available shortly thereafter for play later. We will notify the congregation of the status of our worship schedule next week.

Practices and Gatherings Suspended
We are all disappointed that we have to get together virtually for the time being, and the future of in-person gatherings is uncertain. Please remember that we are minimizing time for people to be out and about, or here at the church. To that end, our normal practice schedules for choir, handbells, and other group activities are suspended. We need to do a few essential recordings with a small number of volunteers from choir, bells, and the like, but these recordings are limited in scope and apply only to filming.
Services like Meals on Wheels will continue, but all volunteers must follow protocols like distancing, masking, and the other well-known protective measures. Some staff will be at church, but to protect their health, as well as yours, please call the office before you come, and avoid in-person contact. Please, be in prayer for our community as we combat the ravages of the coronavirus.

2021 Plans for Conducting Congregational Business
To allow as many of the congregation as possible to participate in conducting the business of the church in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, we are making a couple of changes to our normal business schedule for next year.
First, we are moving the date of our annual congregational meeting from January to Sunday, June 6, 2021, after the 9:00 service. We will send out regular financial reports at the end of next month, but we will review reports, vote on the terms of call for the pastor, and convene a meeting of the corporation at the meeting in June.
Second, Holston Presbytery has granted us a one-year waiver to the Book of Order’s mandate to elect new officers. This means that all our officers who agree to do so will have their term extended one year. For example, an officer in the class of 2020 will become a member of the class of 2021. In the final quarter of 2021, we will nominate officers for election, then elect them in January 2022, effectively correcting the normal succession of officer classes.
This approach allows us to take up the vital business of the church at a time when more people will be comfortable with in-person meetings. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to share them with Pastor Sam.

Change to Christmas Eve Plan
As mentioned in the pastor’s letter, we have changed our Christmas Eve plans. We will no longer gather outside to carol in person at 5:15 p.m. We are taking this measure to protect the health of our community as the pandemic rages around us. Instead, we will gather online for our service, which streams at 7:30 p.m. Tune in at 7:00 for a sing-along preceding the service proper.
Dec. 27 Services Online Only
The session has voted to make both worship services on Sunday, December 27, online only. The reason is to give staff and volunteers a rest and allow them to spend meaningful time at Christmas with their families. We will resume our normal schedule of services, both in-person and online, on the following Sunday, January 3. We will have both services ready for their premieres in advance of the date and time on our YouTube and Facebook sites.

It’s Happening
One benefit of going virtual is that our ongoing acoustic renovation of the sanctuary can take place unimpeded. AVCO recently began work, and while it looks a little chaotic, the end product will be a vast improvement to the sound quality in our sanctuary. Pray that the project goes well.

We Are Praying Together
We are asking all members of our congregation to join our 7-12-7 Prayer Campaign. Please choose the time convenient for you (7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., or 7:00 p.m.) and join us daily in prayer.
