OutLook OnLine Migration a Success!

The OutLook OnLine migration in late August to SFU's new state-of-the-art cloud servers went off without a hitch! Sustainability of the service has been greatly improved thanks to this cost-saving move. Bravo to all who helped make this a smooth transition!
Pointing to the Past: Women who have made an impact

October is Women's History Month in Canada, and British Columbians and Yukoners have an excellent resource at their fingertips to help them learn about and celebrate the bold women who have made an impact in our country: Points to the Past .

Points to the Past is a collection of primary sources including 200 million pages of digitized historical content - maps, photos, newspapers, manuscripts, pamphlets, portraits, and much more. Thanks to geo-authentication, anyone in BC and Yukon with an Internet-connected device can access these resources with no need to log in or authenticate. Researchers investigating historical people and events have a broad range of resources to choose from. Here is a small taste on the topic of women who have made an impact in Canada.

The Persons Case: A Key Step Towards Equality

One can only wonder what kind of thrill passed through Henrietta Muir Edwards and the Famous Five in October 1929 to read the following words in print: Canadian Women's Claim to Sit as Senators Allowed. Known as the Persons Case, this landmark victory granted women in Canada the right to be appointed to the Senate, and set the ball of equality rolling. You can re-live the thrill
by checking out the October 19,1929 summary of the Persons Case in the Times' Law Report.

Change Where Change Demanded

July 5, 1985: another victory for women! Mary Two-Axe Earley, a determined Indigenous activist, officially regained her status (and its inherent rights) under the Indian Act which she had lost 47 years earlier when she married a non-Indigenous man. Read about Earley's victory in the Micmac News and be inspired by a woman who focused the world's attention on "the need for change where change is demanded" (Micmac News, 1985, p. 5).

A Trailblazer in Journalism and More

A teacher, journalist, suffragette, newspaper publisher, and one of the first African-American women to earn a law degree... Mary Ann Shadd Cary can justifiably be called a powerhouse. Check out the Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History and learn about Cary, who published the Provincial Freeman (1853 to 1859) and is considered the first African-American newspaperwoman in North America.
