Every month I write this message in order to keep you updated on events, issues, and important information that affects our community. Next month, we'll all be making decisions on our ballots and no matter how you vote, please vote. It's our privilege and duty as benefactors of our constitution.

Sign Code
Modernization
On Tuesday, September 25th, City Council voted to allow signage, including digital signs, to be placed on 17 City-owned sites in downtown and near the airport. I voted in favor of the staff recommendations. Phase 2 will look at the possibility of expanding the signage to privately owned sites in downtown and along freeways and grand boulevards, not neighborhoods. One of the goals of phase 2 will be to get old billboards out of residential areas. I live in a neighborhood that has them, and some are an eyesore. I'm not looking to replicate that in other neighborhoods and would like to get the existing ones cleaned up. I look forward to the continued community discussion on this issue.

College Football Playoff National Championship Game
The 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship (CFP) is coming to San Jose in January with downtown hosting the free, family-friendly fan central festivities on Championship Campus! In preparation for this event, I personally visited the 2018 CFP in Atlanta, Georgia with the 2019 Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC) delegation. It was an amazing event with hundreds of thousands of fans visiting Atlanta and exploring the city, playoff activities, and game. San Jose is in for a huge treat! This is a great opportunity for San Jose to showcase its beauty and diversity on the national stage.
In addition to the incredible economic impacts from out of town visitors, the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation and their Extra Yard for Teachers initiative will provide $1 Million in support for Bay Area educators. The CFP Foundation and BAHC will also make a $150,000 contribution toward direct grants to help educators cover home purchase costs. Three public school teachers and/or staff members will receive grants of $25,000 that they can pair with Landed down payment support or other existing down payment programs to help them own homes.
We are fortunate to have back-to-back family friendly programming going on in downtown this year. Christmas in the Park will run from November 23, 2018 to December 25, 2018 with a quick turnaround for the creation of Championship Campus that will include live ESPN broadcasts in downtown San Jose, AT&T Playoff Playlist Live free concert series at Discovery Meadow and Playoff Fan Central at the San Jose Convention Center, Media Day at SAP Center, among many other family-friendly activities and events starting January 4, 2019.

September 29th marked 100 Days until kickoff on January 7, 2019. To commemorate this special event, we raised the College Football Playoff National Championship flag at City Hall on September 28th. I was joined by my council colleagues, the Bay Area Host Committee, San Francisco 49ers representatives and drumline, and members of the community who helped bring this historic weekend to San Jose!

Trash Talks

Instead of sitting around drinking coffee, I've decided to make our time together one of action along with information sharing. Let's pick up trash while we talk! Our first session of "Trash Talk" will take place Friday, October 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. starting out at the new 7-Eleven on the corner of Bascom Avenue and Stevens Creek Blvd. (2230 Stevens Creek Blvd.) 7-eleven will provide free coffee and bakery items for all volunteers.
Residents of District 6 are invited to join me and my District 6 Office team to pick up trash along Bascom Avenue and Stevens Creek Blvd. This will be a great opportunity for District 6 residents to talk to me and my staff about issues you are concerned with in our district and clean up our neighborhoods all at the same time! All trash-collecting equipment will be provided.

10th Annual Billy DeFrank Community Center Fundraiser - Hamilton

The Tony-award wining show, HAMILTON (in drag) from its sold-out performances is coming to San Jose for a one-time performance.
Proceeds raised from this fundraiser will benefit the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+Community Center.

On Wednesday, September 12th, we celebrated the Grand Opening of Smart & Final Extra! They are located on 1290 W. San Carlos St. Stop by the new storefront and welcome them to District 6!

Triumph San Jose Ribbon Cutting
On Friday, September 21st, I joined Mayor Sam Liccardo in celebrating the Ribbon Cutting of Triumph San Jose, a top-selling European motorcycle brand, located at 456 Meridian Ave. The Grand Opening of the Triumph San Jose took place on Saturday, September 22nd.

The Grateful Garment Project
I joined Assemblymember Evan Low for the State of Assembly Address on Monday, September 24th. Lisa J. Blanchard, a District 6 resident, was recognized as a Community Hero.
Lisa is the founder of
The Grateful Garment Project whose mission is to ensure that every victim of a sexual crime is provided with whatever new clothing, toiletries, snacks, and other miscellaneous items that he or she may require, to reduce further negative impact against their well being. Lisa has dedicated significant amounts of time to working with people not only professionally, but also in a volunteer capacity. It is her vision that no victim of sexual assault ever experience further suffering due to lack of resources.

City Auditor's Annual Resident Survey
From now until October 16, San Jose residents can help shape the future of San Jose by completing an online survey found
here.
The survey, conducted by the National Research Center in coordination with the City Auditor, includes questions about City services provided to residents, as well as the quality of life in San Jose in general.
Your participation is very important. We want all residents' voices heard. Last year, nearly 1,900 people took part. The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. The survey is completely anonymous. No personal information will be collected or shared.
Results will be included in the City Auditor's Annual Report on City Services which will be released in December and presented to the City Council in January.

No Weekend SF Train Service
Beginning October 6, 2018 to late Spring 2019, trains will not serve the San Francisco or 22nd Street stations on weekends. Caltrain service will stop at Bayshore Station and free bus service will transport passengers to the 22nd and San Francisco stations.
Caltrain encourages customers to consider alternative transit options on weekends, including BART via Millbrae Station. Weekday Caltrain service will not be impacted.

San Jose Arena Authority Board Vacancies
The San Jose Arena Authority is seeking volunteer candidates to submit their resume for two current vacancies on the Arena Authority Board of Directors. The 19-member San Jose Arena Authority Board of Directors convene monthly to identify and address issues relating to the management and operation of SAP Center at San Jose, Solar4America Ice at San Jose, and San Jose Municipal Stadium.
The Arena Authority is seeking interested candidates with experience in transit/urban planning.

SHPNA will be giving out glow necklaces and there will be lots of other family friendly fun including a "Trunk-or-Treat" at the Westminister Presbyterian Church and the Hester Tunnel will be decorated in a surprise theme.
