National Survey Provides "State of the Union" of the Medical Profession
The newly released Survey of America's Physicians: Practice Patterns and Perspectives addresses a wide range of questions about who physicians are and how they practice.
The Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) is spotlighting a national survey on the demographics of physicians and how they practice.
The survey is based on nearly 9,000 physician responses and reveals data touching on some of the most pressing trends and challenges in healthcare today, including:
Physician burnout. Burnout is a concern, with 78 percent of physicians sometimes, often or always having feelings of burnout. Due to these feelings, 46 percent of physicians plan to make a major change in their practices. The burnout rate is higher for female physicians than for males.
The physician shortage. Eighty percent of physicians indicate that they are at full capacity or are overextended and do not have time to see more patients. Physicians are working fewer hours and seeing fewer patients on average, contributing to the physician shortage.
Poverty/the social determinants of health. Eighty-eight percent of physicians surveyed indicate that some, many or all of their patients have a social condition that poses a serious impediment to their health.
Opioid use. The majority (69 percent) are prescribing fewer pain medications in light of the opioid crisis.
Employed vs. independent physicians. While employed physicians work 3.4 percent more hours than practice owners (a counterintuitive finding), they see 11.8 percent fewer patients.
Value-based payments. Only 47 percent of physicians indicate that any of their compensation is tied to value-based payments. Valued-based payments comprise about 14 percent of the total income of these doctors.

BeRxSAFE alliance Promotes Drug Take Back Day with Twitter Chat
The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) promotes a "DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day" twice a year. The effort focuses on the importance of safe disposal of unwanted and expired medications. This autumn, the efforts will include a Twitter Chat with a collaboration of Michigan organizations that advocate on behalf of community health issues. As part of the "
BeRxSAFE" coalition, the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) will join in to promote the Oct. 27 event, as well as promote safe drug disposal year round.
The Twitter Chat will take place on October 24, just a few days before the DEA event.
Twitter chats are a great way to highlight a particular issue, generate valuable discussions and feedback, and demonstrate leadership. The MOA has participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Twitter Chats in the past and the events have shown to generate lively conversations and helped to show a united front on an issue that is one of the most urgent community health issues of our time.
The Be Rx SAFE Twitter Chat Participants include:
AARP of Michigan
Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services
Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
Michigan Health and Hospital Association
Michigan Osteopathic Association

Dr. Peter Hahn chosen as new President & CEO of Metro Health
Metro Health - University of Michigan Health has become the region's first physician-led healthcare system following the selection of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Peter Hahn as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Hahn begins in the new role Oct. 1, following a national search for candidates to succeed Michael Faas, who last year announced his plan to retire after 25 years at Metro.
"Dr. Hahn is the ideal selection to carry forward the transformational, visionary leadership of Mike Faas," said Carlos Sanchez, Co-Chair of the Metro Health Hospital Board. "The unanimous decision by our board members confirms Peter is the right choice at the right time to build on Metro Health's legacy of patient-focused clinical excellence for West Michigan."
Faas applauded the board's decision, saying Dr. Hahn will provide continuity of leadership, using the strategic plan to keep Metro Health - University of Michigan Health at the forefront of medicine.
The Michigan Osteopathic Association congratulates the new President and CEO of Metro Health, Dr. Peter Hahn!

Doctors say opioid bill 'great first step,' more forward-planning needed
Dr. William Morrone's insight featured in Healio.com news
"All across America you have people trying to access treatment for opioid use and substance use disorder. But there has been this institutional stigma to providing medication-assisted therapy, even though it has been proven to show up to an 80% success rate in treating people from their heroin addiction" - William Morrone, DO, MPH
