Greetings from Director Tom Hui Greetings

July has certainly been a busy month for us. Earlier this month, we joined Mayor Ed Lee and District 3 Supervisor Julie Christensen in announcing our newest efforts in seismic outreach. We are excited to award two great community-based organizations in Chinatown both a $100,000 grant to provide seismic safety outreach to their diverse communities. DBI is proud to fund Community Youth Center (CYC) and Self-Help for the Elderly (SHE) in hosting free hands-on training on emergency preparedness, fire safety, and post-disaster response. Together, they will host a total of 80 workshops to reach 10,000 residents through the Willie Wong Playground and Portsmouth Square service areas beginning mid-July 2015. Please read more on seismic safety outreach below.

In this issue we've added a new section featuring the latest legislation to impact the department. On a regular basis, our department works closely with the Mayor's Office and the Board of Supervisors on various legislations to better protect building and life safety. Our Legislative Watch will provide updates on introduced, proposed, or passed legislation that pertains to the department's programs and  services.

Also, in this issue, we are introducing our newest hires. Let's give a big welcome to DBI's newest employees!

Seismic Safety Outreach in ChinatownSeismicGrants

Through Community Youth Center and Self-Help for the Elderly, seismic safety trainings will be offered in both English and Chinese to effectively reach the residents of Chinatown. These workshops are open to all who live in the service areas, but through the two organizations' client-base will center on two age groups, our senior community as well as our young leaders of tomorrow. Together with our partners at the Department of Emergency Management, the Fire Department and Recreation and Parks, our communities will be more equipped and prepared for the next disaster. This outreach program is currently only available in Chinatown, but DBI is expanding our efforts in other neighborhoods in the coming year.

What to Expect During Construction in Your Neighborhoodconstruction

As building construction continues to ramp up in the City, you may have questions about the construction work occurring in your neighborhood or community. Building construction can occur between the hours of 7AM to 8PM, seven days a week, including holidays. Any work done outside of these hours requires a special Night Noise permit from DBI. If you suspect illegal construction activity such as work is happening without permits, you may file a complaint online or over the phone  with DBI.
