THE  PROVIDENCE  PEN
Chance and Chase with our resident monarch butterfly!

DEAR FRIENDS:

As the Fall quarter continues at Providence, we are grateful for new and familiar faces. This is a unique school because each student is unique. We fulfill a desperate need--a small tutorial environment with a big heart for tailoring our instruction to each child's God-given design. We strive to make Christian schooling possible for vulnerable students in our neighborhoods--those unlikely to enjoy such an opportunity without the generosity of the Friends of Providence.

We are committed to keeping you updated on the progress you have made possible.

  • READING FOR CHANGE
    -
Providence students have accepted the Reading for Change open book challenge. Find out more here.  Last year, our sponsors raised over $4,000 for this worthy cause. Past and present sponsors include AgChoice Farm Credit, Cumberland Valley Tree Service, Life Guide Financial Services, Shippensburg Public Library, McDonalds, and F& M Trust. Thank you to friends and families of students who have given generously to encourage our readers. Last year our students read over 26,000 pages!
  • VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED  - Perhaps you could lend your expertise to the school. Call us at (717) 298-8090 to discuss how you could change lives with your available time and talent.
  • PROVIDENCE STEAM  - Tuesday afternoons in 2018-19 are a combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math--Providence STEAM! In addition to Art with Mrs. Fitzpatrick and Mr. Hannaman, Mr. Tom Clark continues his work with 4th through 7th Grade students in a major model railroading project that incorporates hands-on cooperative group work. This teaches the application of knowledge across the curriculum. We are eager to see the finished project!
  • PROVIDENCE 360
Our most recent events in this unique curricular approach include:
    • Friday, September 28 th - Greene Township Park
    • Thursday Afternoons - Every other Thursday at Cumberland Valley School of Music for keyboarding lessons for interested 5th to 7th students.
    • 2nd Friday in November through March in afternoon - YMCA Gym and Swim!
These were all wonderful opportunities for learning beyond the building.

  FRIENDS OF PROVIDENCE CAMPAIGN

Give all  praise and glory to God, as we are now in our fourth academic year--and without debt. The gifts of God's people for God's work at Providence are crucial, particularly in these last few giving months of 2018. Please consider an end of 2018 gift to help us strengthen our mission to vulnerable children.  Our goal is to raise at least $20,000 in the next few months. Please be in prayer about how you might play a role in supporting this vital mission. Glory to God for His all-sufficient providence thus far!

HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT

On June 1, 1895, the Pennsylvania Soldiers' Orphans Industrial School opened on this campus to 240 students to consolidate the various Pennsylvania Soldiers' Orphan schools in this one location. These schools were founded to care for and educate orphans of fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Original plans called for sixteen double cottages each housing sixty students. Their location was to be facing the Administration building around the center oval. Sadly, the first cottage came thirty-five years later. In its early years, living quarters for staff and students, dining room, and classrooms were relegated to this one building pictured above. In a situation inconceivable to our hyper-communication era, no telegraph equipment existed until Western Union installed equipment in the school's second year!
Thank you, FRIENDS of PROVIDENCE!  We will do our best to keep you informed of God's work through His people at Providence. Thank you for giving your time, wisdom, and treasure to glorify God in this work for vulnerable children and their families.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Garner
